Well, if you'd asked me before I went to the Stockton show in Jan, I would have said Silkies and Turkens (even though Jordan keeps reminding me that they are great layers), but once I saw the Modern Games, I have to say that they are hideous (at least to me). They creeped me out so badly I had to go to another section of the show barn!!!! YUK!!!! The Cornish Crosses are also gross - especially in person! I'm getting the creeps just thinking about them!!! I'm a lover of the big birds - Orps are my favorite, but I also love Black Australorps, Wellies, Marans, etc. Good thing we all have differing likes and dislikes, or we wouldn't have nearly so many chicken breeds to choose from, huh?

Anything golden or buff colored turns me off, including other types of animals (can't stand golden retrievers or palominos, and I've never been attracted to blonds. no offense intended, just not my thing). I love the columbian or lakenvelder coloring. The white against a green lawn is stunning, and the black edges keep the white from being overwhelming.

For some reason, this post sort of offends me......am I the only one? Everyone hating on each others chickens? I guess at least it is all civilized, so far......

#1 Turkens- Have to have Vulture DNA in there somewhere. I would be afraid to fall asleep outside and find them circling me. The only bird uglier is a Muscovy(tumor head) duck.

#2 Silkies- aka walking asphyxiated dust bunnies. I had one before and it was always vanishing for days. I would find it trying to hatch cucumbers, rocks, acorns, squash or whatever it could sit on. The rooster was afraid of her and the hens pecked her so much I had to keep in a separate cage. I even bought a silkie rooster for her because I had some compassion because she was alone. He was scared of her too. She was too slow to escape a cat. Never laid one egg in two years. I secretly cheered for the cat.

#3 Frizzles-Walking Dusters. Zero ability to escape predators, poor egg layers, rooster freaked out by her, hens pecked her bald. The one I had was somewhat stupid (perhaps the pecking) as she would try to fly up to the roost and hit it 9/10. When she did make it to the roost any tilting and she would fall off backwards. A rat killed her. I would like to give that rat piece of cheese.

#4 Leghorns-Freaked out by caterpillars, their feed, reflections in the water, me calling them, next door neighbors talking. Whenever this crazy behavior happens they stop laying. I'm thinking of making chicken gumbo soup because they aren't heavy enough to make a chicken meal.

#5 Any chicken with a mop top.

#6 Modern Game-Looks too much like the roadrunner cartoon.

Anything else is fine with me...that I know of.
