What breed is my hen?

Every kind of breed I thought of, I had to cancel out, because for cochins......i didn't know how big she was and how much of her was fluff and then I saw clean legs, so that was out. Then Minorcas.....she didn't have the white earlobes and looked more muscular. Even Australorps.....the stance just didn't look right. As for blackstars.......no. She didn't have the rust color chest. I have to agree that she is a combo of a few things the old woman had in her coop. My momma use to call chickens like that, Creole. Just hope she is a good chicken for whatever you are like in chickens.

CTChick said: no Wt. ears so I'm gonna change my guess to a Black sex-link and they can be all black with no red in the neck,or head area. Look on feathersite under sex-links then go to Kintaline farms from there. you'll see multiple color patterns on their BSLs from alot of red on them to none.

Also the leg color is wrong to be a BA. BA's feet are grayish-black with pinkish-white bottoms and between toes, toenails should be white also.

Another trait for a BA is dark bay(brown) eyes the eyes on this hen are orangish-yellow the eye color standard for BRs and RIReds the parent stock that is used to produce BSL.

Ya know... that is a very pretty bird... It is a ringer for a black marans... which sometimes don't lay a dark egg... Not considered true marans without the coloring but the type and comb... It could be someone crossed a marans on another bird therefore eliminating the dark egg layer portion of the program. I have an exact replica of this bird in the dark egg layer variety... they could be sisters.

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. I would be surprised if Mammie were a sex link only because this lady had some very exotic birds and made a point that she hatched them all herself. Yes, she could have been lying but why ... I was going to buy the birds anyway. Her set up was beautiful, birds were amazing and healthy - I was totally impressed. Plus she raised doves and pigeons - also well kept, immaculate coops. C'mon ... immaculate??? Amazing. She also has meaties, and a woman I know has bought birds from her. She will kill and cook them, Indian (Hindu) style. First she says a prayer and asks the bird for permission to kill and eat it. Okay, I can hear some snickers - but Hindus believe in reincarnation and one way an animal "evolves" is to do good for another (obviously this works for people too). So giving your life to feed another is considered a good deed.

Oh, heck - I just thought it was interesting. And it WAS about chickens!

Oh - she is very chatty, my most vocal hen. Does that mean anything? Sometimes she sounds like a hysterical woman ... she gets worked up over a worm, a leaf, watching the feeder getting filled up, a rooster looking at her the wrong way ... never mean or pecky -- just LOUD.

OK...that's too cute. If you ever figure out what she is, I want to know. I want one.
