How can you tell, I’m still learning? The person selling them say the are pure breed but don’t know the breed? I’m looking for maran for my ladies and was really hoping this was it.

He is impure for the barring gene, has red leakage, a pea comb (marans or barred rocks would have a single comb), and has a beard.

Absolutely 100% a mutt.
Marans have a bit of feathers on the shanks, single combs (this one has an impure pea comb) and they do not have beards.
He would have to look more lighter (white bars bigger than darker ones) and no leakage of other colours. Maybe it's crossed with a Marans, but it is not pure
