What did you do in the garden today?

@Wee Farmer Sarah, yes you can cut/cure/plant your potatoes. Some of my seed potatoes were growing sprouts, but I cut them up and have high hopes for a good crop.
Thank you. I don't use potatoes as much usually so haven't had the inclination to grow them. However I do have the space and I know I can freeze the excess so I don't waste them.

we are not big potato eaters either, usually eat grains. But a fresh dug potato is very tasty! And, they freeze well and make good soup additions in the winter.

Morning all. Been sewing up a storm, production in the little shop is now switched over to entirely surgical hats. My arthritis in my hands is screaming, but I keep telling it to shut up.

I'll drop off another load today and pick up some more fabric. With the scraps, I'll toss some masks together.

I'm ready to put up a sign that says "i'm sorry you and your kids are home and cannot self entertain, even with full utilities, 9 million tv channels, internet, and video games, but I AM NOT A PETTING ZOO! No, you cannot come play with or pet the animals. GO HOME."

having cute/fluffy/large animals would be quite a draw, but, you’re right...there are a ton of ways to occupy your time in your own space, or take a walk.

Does anyone have any advise for a first time potato plant? I bought a 5 lb bag of yukon gold seed potatoes. Should I plant them right in my garden? Or go the container route?
I planted them in a raised row last year and two containers. I wasn't impressed with the containers. The raised row worked great. Plant the potato 6-8 inches deep in loose soil. I till before planting. Then when the plant is a foot tall, mound soil (or straw, compost, whatever you got) to cover the lower half of the plant. I mounded a second time when the plant grew to be a foot above the soil again covering the lower half. We pulled at least 20lbs of potatoes from 1 row. There was probably 3lbs of seed potatoes planted there. The rest of my 5lb bag went in the containers (4 potatoes in each). I was not at all impressed with the containers. I have to say though, we used the plant deep and forgot about them method in the containers. Perhaps if you add soil (or whatever medium) slowly as the plants grow you'll get better container results.
This year I'm strictly planting them in rows, and we are planting 55 seed potatoes across 5 rows. Hopefully again in mid summer for a fall harvest too. That's the way to go IMO.

garden will be good. Some people construct potato towers. @WthrLady constructed some and has pics, if I’m remembering correctly. I’m putting them in raised beds. So far so good with plant and forget. This year I will hopefully mound them at least once as @BReeder! mentioned for a bigger harvest. My plan is to plant them in the spring, hopefully next week. But a later planting for a later harvest is also fine. Just remember to water consistently and well while they are flowering. Let them die back then harvest a bout a week or two later. Once harvested, let them “cure” in a well ventilated area before storage, for longer storage. Some types don't store as well as others.
