What did you do in the garden today?

YUP! I do every year! I LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! They are prolific and smaller than paste tomatoes so you don't need to cut the crap out of them to get them in the mill. I puree them as fast as I can pick them and freeze the puree for later.

I also use them for making the most amazing pizza sauce!!

Slice them lengthwise for non drippy sandwiches.
Slice them fine for ON pizza.
I just discovered the canned ones this year and even though it's late to start the seeds I'm going to have to give it a try.

In the garden today, I got 3 climbing roses planted, 5 new raspberry starts, a bunch of watering, and more work on my modified walipini which I hope to have finished in a week or so so I can have a decent chance of growing most of our veggies for the year in this land of 10 month winters (last year we had all of 6 weeks frost-free and 2 weeks after first fall frost, night temps hit -10 F).

I got some more of the chain link fence up but I still need to move more.
The puppies come home with tomorrow when I get off work. Made a run to the store for chew toys and puppy chow. Also delivered 5 dozen eggs. Headed to bed now!
Yesterday hubby and I went and got a bunch of alpaca and llama poo for the garden. It will be going in to the raised bed that hubby is almost finished building.
I think I also have a broody in the big coop. She is on day 2 or 3. Not sure how many eggs she has.

We lost 2 chicks last night. :( It was their first night in the outside coop and it might have been too cold. I've changed their set up temporarily, still outside in the coop but warmer and they all seem happy. We'll put our lost ones at the base of a tree we'll be planting later today. Hard not to feel guilty but I tell myself they could have had hidden issues and would have died sooner or later and could have been roosters that I'd have to send to freezer camp anyway.

The peas are growing like crazy and so pretty! This is the first time I've had such nice conditions for growing peas so I am really hoping for good results. The lettuce is now growing so well I'll be harvesting the whole thing instead of just pulling a few leaves. Got to get the radishes planted today. Mid 50s to 60s today and rain later so better get busy.
So so sorry bout your babies :hugs

Aloha garden gang!
Too many posts to catch them all. Looks like everyone is good give or take a few chick losses. Always tragic IMO.
I played a little in the garden this morning for a few hours. Planted peppers, fixed old tomato cage and cleaned up toms and sewed lettuce seeds. Also worked some in the front yard. All looks lovely cept what the monster chickens trampled.
Beautiful, beautiful chicken run (i think) @Sueby . Don't want to go back and check cuz I will get lost all over again with so many new posts. Yep, looking like spring! Awesome. Wow, with everyone gobbling up chicks and incubators I had better go put $$ down on the one I am waiting for... maybe even call the 2 other feed stores to see what they got going on... :hmm
My one mamma is a beast. I have never seen anything like it. She grabs my pants and growls cuz she wants something. All of the hens cept senior hen is afraid of her because she is attacking everyone. She is just a momster.
I have 1 more week 4 Jazz to reemerge from her zombie brood. Wonder what she has got going...? don't know for sure where her nest is but think it is minimum 1 property away. I lost her in the mango forest  Hope they are cute and she has a few of Gus's babies.

Dusty graduated to the big coop on her own. I let her pick her own company and she loves Bruce. I see them together often. That is a relief.

Going back up to Koke'e to mow, set a gate post, patch a hole and clean. K. Good night all. Stay well, stay safe, stay home, stay groovy and awesome!!! Peace out!!! L.

Ok. I think our 5yr old matriarch has gone broody for the first time since 2019. She wouldn't sleep with the others last night. She's sitting on 5 eggs right now; I usually let her set on 10-16. Her name is "Fanny" as she is a pain in the you know what. Here's a pic of missy fan fan giving me stink eye 😜View attachment 2118150
oh she is soooo cute :love I love her!

Hello gardeners!

I wanted to put this up.

Still wondering if you should be growing your own food?

Today I tried to get some other family members to grow their own food. They cut me off and didn't listen to anything I said. It was quite frustrating.

Another source I looked at from back east somewhere showed news pics of people having to stand in line to get boxes of food. They couldn't even go in the stores. (I wish I'd saved that link.)

This chaos going on and how sloppy people are make this being possible for a huge mess.

I'm not even a prepper or anything. I just don't want to be one of those guys that has to stand in those lines (or sit in their cars) waiting for a box of food.

Aloha and welcome to the garden thread @nao57
Yes, it is wild out there. Not bad at all where I am but that is probably because we buttoned up pretty quick and everyone (for the most part) is adhering to the mayors request. No a**wipes w/ AK's storming the courthouse thank god. We have another month to go... so yes, gardening is a great idea. With all of the positive cases in the meat houses and shortages, it is very scary. I hope the US sees this as an opportunity to invent and be more self reliant. Feels good and safe. I am doing all I can. I am grateful for chickens and garden and fruit trees. This thread is fun, inspiring and resourceful. Even bee's and mushrooms going on on this thread lol.
I hope you are well, safe and gardening yourself. Share what ya got going on, again welcome to this thread.

Are those the same San Marzanos as the great canned tomatoes? Have you grown them before?
I treat the soil with calcium in the hole when I plant them, and then every two weeks I top dress them with the same mix. Calcium, baby asp, and I can't remember the other thing, or you can use Tomato-Tone food.

They CAN be prone to blossom end rot in some soils.

Yes, same maters! I grew them last year & they did great. I fertilized them heavily with Dr Earths organic tomato fertilizer & kept them steadily watered & had no blossom end rot except in the very beginning before I knew they needed so much love. They are fantastic sauce tomatoes if you have the right conditions but they can be tricky. I threw them in the freezer as I picked them, then thawed & made sauce or crushed & canned them. They are big producers, I still have some left.

Morning everyone. Supposed to have a ling stretch of good weather. I think I will harden off the brandy boys this week & plan to plant everything next weekend.

New girls are still hanging in there, dodging mean girl. I think they couldn't wait to get to bed to get away from her last night!

Heading to a friends to swap some plants. We will have tea in the driveway, 6 feet apart, lol. (She is a respiratory therapist at a hospital & I have asthma so probably 10 ft apart!)
