What did you do in the garden today?

I never had a problem with flea beetles in all the years I had gardened... And then out of no where-This little army of devastation attacked and I had them for years after.
Apparently they like shade, love mulch and boc choy . Be sure to treat the mulch around the base of the plants as well.  grow your calciferous plants is the sunniest part of your garden for a few years.

I ended up moving plots, but I know you have raised beds so that is not an option.

I think we brought ours in. We would drive around and pick up bags of leaves waiting for the refuse trucks on trash day, and use them for mulch. We should have composted them first.

The older I get the worse my eyesight gets, but my hind sight is getting sharper.

They started on my joi choy... Everything is mulched, I'm thinking they came with the new soil... Where I mulched with grass over the wood chips though, no sign of them. Thank you for the advice, most of my beds aren't raised so I can shift things around next year... I think I'll get some hay today, toss it on top...

Put on my boots to put up fence for pole beans . Not raining today .

Had a little eye surgery yesterday so scheming how soon I can get back out there. Probably okay if I don't go flinging dirt into my eyes like a couple of weeks ago. Goodness

Our neighbors have a huge garden that was being overrun with grasshoppers. They asked what I did to keep the little monsters from eating our garden down and I calmly replied. "I have chickens.". They now have a dozen little peeps patrolling their garden.

I haven't figured that one out yet - I'm sure if I let the chickens in to eat the bugs, they would eat all my sprouts and dig up all my veggies!

I have tomato blossoms, and pepper buds. Eating salads. Chasing chickies out of the garden b/c they can still squirt through the electronet fencing. Need to finish spreading hay. Haven't put up pea trellis yet, and getting some sugar snap blossoms. Why can't I learn to put up the fence first. I belong on the slow bus when it comes to that!!!

LOL. I have to learn things the hard way, and still don't learn sometimes!

I'm planting the blackberries I bought months ago. Oh well, they will look good next year!

my family doesn't really like radishes but I was given the seeds and had plenty room in my garden so we planted them. But our rabbits love the leaves
Suggestion.. KEep the radishes well watered to keep the heat down, and if that is still too much, cook the radishes. THe heat disappears when cooked!! My mother would cook them, but I cant say I liked that recipe well enough to dig it up. So . .. . I dont have any recipes but would like to find some to try.

Those look like French Breakfast or D'Avignon (not sure of the spelling). If so, they are super mild, and yummy when sliced lengthwise and slathered with peanut butter. I wasn't a radish eater either, until I discovered this one, and tried the peanut butter. I could eat a whole plate full! I always order an extra large packet of seeds, and sprinkle a few seeds when ever I plant any other crop. They make great row markers: pop up in a jiffy, and come out just when the target crop is getting started. When I see radish sprouts, I may not remember what I planted there, but... will know that I planted something there!
lol, I can never find super size packs of radishes!! Will invest next year in them though because as you say, it marks where something was planted. lol

Quote: My veggie garden is the only place I have the critters though I do get at least 8 hours of full sun there. I'm thinking they overwintered in the raised beds BUT they really focus on the eggplant . I got them 3 seasons ago and I think they came with some sweet peat I used that year. I am using heat treated chopped hay this year (which still had weed seeds anyway).
Thanks for your helpful comments.
I am definitely keep the row cover plus spray double punch in mind hennible.

I just sprayed and covered again... Bit of DE, hay mulch in some spots... I'll finish the hay layer tomorrow... It sucks, I don't want to kill the "good" bugs... May need to order some neem oil...

No flea beetle in the greenhouse but a few tomatillos have this going on... I removed the affected leaves, sprayed and used DE in the drier spots... Is this a type of aphid causing this?

Now come on good chance your going to live to see 90+, I know five people in their 90's two still do lite gardening. I do salad pots for my senior clients they water and pick the produce and attend to the flowers.

Haven't been able to work in the garden do to rain hopeful Wed. beds dropped two inches in soil from all the hard rains we've had this month. Mulch tomorrow with rabbit manure and grass clipping to bring help them back.

FLEA BEETLE: try floating row cover, DE, or trap crop mustard or radish
