What did you do in the garden today?

The nuts have been drying for a few weeks unless I mixed up which were picked up then and which were yesterday. I had picked up just a few then in case the squirrels went for them. I wasn't going to harvest many unless I found the nutcracker.

Dh got one open. He did better at positioning it to get a better angle. He is also a lot stronger - it was quite scary to watch how much pressure it took.

It was delicious!!! Much better than the ones from the store.

I have some nuts from last year, or maybe the year before. I'll try those in case I was trying one that wasn't dry enough.

Either way, maybe we can refit the pecan cracker with a longer handle. It seems new walnut crackers run about $100 - $150. Or I saw some descriptions of techniques for cracking them with a hammer and/or cutting pliers that look like they work better than what we've tried.

I ordered a pair of these 7 x 6 feet insect and bird netting for my DYI Earth Box. I hope it fits around my tomato cage. Putting a fruit bag on each fruit on a cluster of large green tomatoes is stressing me out. When I accidently bump into a newly developed one, it falls off.

Did I order some more seeds for spring? Yes. Will I inevitably order more than I could possibly need in a fit of winter-induced sadness? Also yes.

Some time after the last frost, I'm planning to clear the way for a wildflower field. It'll take about 3 years to really establish, but it's exciting to dream of colorful, pollinator-friendly vistas from the deck.

I ordered some, but I am afraid they sent me the old 2023 stuff. A lot of my newly bought seed packets did not sprout yet, and it's been about a month in the moisture dome.

it rained almost all night. I'll take advantage of soft soil and plant a few trees. I finally decided where to plant citruses: behind the coops. they will be well protected from the north wind. now I have to decide where to plant eucalyptus. we have strong winds here so it should be planted away from the house.

I tried a walnut from last year so am positive it is dry enough and couldn't crack it with the pecan cracker. Dh cracked it but he bent the lever arm doing it.

It tasted ok. Similar to the walnuts from the grocery store, maybe somewhat less good. The nut may have been from two years ago rather than last year.
