Major thaw happening now, and we won't get below freezing except at night this weekend. They said there could be 50s next week.

No, no, no. I do not want the trees to think it's time to wake up...

Our maple producers are ready! January thaw is usually when the sap starts running. They are all hoping for a long stretch of freeze thaw cycles to get a good year in.

So, I need egg cartons. My freebies from friends are all in use. So, I headed to a few internet places..Romberg, egg cartons.com, Meyer hatchery…and yes, Amazon. Meyer had what I wanted, so I put 75 cartons in the cart (less per item cost at that point), and went to checkout. I have a POBox, and a street address. I tried both. But, I could have them shipped fed Ex (I think ground, not overnight) for $1,200 (yes, 1.2k), or UPS OR USPS for around $250…..

Yeah, I’m not buying them.

I'm excited for Friday! supposed to be in the high 40s and no rain I've arranged to have a half day off work, and I'm going to pick up all the branches in the yard from the last couple of windstorms. January thaw has my cabin fever going hard

Thanks for reminding me. I was thinking about tapping the bigleaf maple tree out back last winter but never got around to it. Maybe I will this year. Bigleaf maple syrup is a thing. LOL

Thanks for the responses on the issue of eating frozen and cracked eggs...

People are afraid of germs getting in through the crack..... I figure cooking kills such things.

To be clear, I was referring to all the frozen and cracked eggs I get in the winter. I figure that if the egg freezes and then cracks, that no bacteria is harming the eggs at that point due to the cold. So, I take the egg(s) inside, wash them off, and let them thaw out overnight in the refrigerator. I eat them the next day. Never had a problem.

I won't because our cracked and frozen eggs are sitting in some seriously questionable conditions.
If they've just been frozen, but have not craked, eh, I'll use them for baking and cooking or hardboiled NO problem.
OLD, like a pile of mystery eggs that have been frozen, nah, pass, no idea how many freeze thaw cycles, no idea how old they really are.

Where I live, we have not had a day above freezing in about 5 weeks. But I can understand the issue of having them frozen, cracked, and thawed out repeatedly in a hidden stash somewhere and I would not want to eat them either. Not worth the risk to me at that point.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Frozen, thawed, frozen, broken, thawed...yeah no thanks.

Well, that might be issue if you find a hidden stash of eggs somewhere. My hens seldom ever lay an egg outside of the nest boxes. So, as I gather my eggs 2X-3X times daily, if I pick up a frozen and cracked egg, at least I know it is that day fresh.

If I pick up a cracked egg in the summertime, I'll just scramble it up and feed it back to the chickens as well.

We haven't been above freezing either, but we also don't have eggs over the winter. Onesy two-sy maybe, but those don't just crack when they freeze, but explode. Not worth it to even bother with those, cracked and oozing is on that list too.

Just not worth it.

Ya, mine is under 3 feet of snow too. We hit 33 today, so there is melting going on, but it's going to be a while.

it was too cold here so my friend didn't come to plow. better for me as I have to plant the trees as soon as he plows. if left for some time it will be hard to dig. I also have to go to athens to buy a drill auger bit that will help me a lot.
