I love this TropicalBabies! All the green and chickens is just what I need!! I miss HI and all the wyld chickens and kitties. Have family over there and use to go every summer. I need something like your set-up b/c my ladies and gents are free-range...meaning I can't grow anything unless its above the ground or high up. I'll have to show hubby this

What island is your family on? When was the last time you came for a visit? Pre married or pre kids lol. Priorities you have a beautiful home to work at and kids... another full time job.

These darn chickens have changed my gardening for the worse. It's a little heartbreaking, but oh well, I love them and get thrilled those few moments when I feel like I have actually accomplished both to some degree. Definitely not like it was pre chickens, I had big baskets of food from my little spot and got to share a lot, now I am lucky to supplement a salad. But it is a GOOD salad. Especially now days... It took me a few years to get to where I am as far as harmony... they won more battles than I did and they still tear up the plantings around the house. I have put potted plants in to slow them down but they still wreck things and I give up and let it go sometimes. Hence the garden thread so I can be inspired and guilt myself into making things look better. Thanks gang!!!! I am looking forward to seeing your big gardens going full blast. I can't wait to be jealous

I just realized how fast the clock is ticking for me to get potatoes in the ground. I want 2 harvests of potatoes this year. I need to get them in ASAP to make that happen.
The problem is a huge pile of fill dirt (like 7 -8 cu. yds worth!) I need to move out the way first. I'm going to use most of it in the bottom of my 3 new raised beds as bulking material. Since I build them 2ft tall for convenience (less bending) I can get away with fill dirt in the lower part. I really need to get on with building those beds as well as moving the old beds. I checked the weather again to see if the rain will hold off so I can get out there. Nope! Instead of rain Friday-Sunday, now there's supposed to be rain Thursday-Sunday and again Tuesday. I cannot catch a break. I'm not going to be able to move dirt in the rain, let alone build raised beds. Now I'll likely have to wait until next weekend and hope the weather is better then.

I did get some more of the strawberry roots planted, but not all of them and I did not get to move the 2 cherry bushed yet. After having told me they did not need me to work Wednesday evening ( a round noon), I got a phone call at 4:00 ( which is when that shift starts) and was told they were wrong, they did need me to come in!
So I put away the rest of the strawberry roots, cleaned up, collected eggs and went to work.
They lady that has been out on FMLA that I have been filling in for is due to come back on Monday. So this might be the end of my overtime. I also bought some cilantro today and got it planted in the garden.

In good news, my peppers are sprouting! There was nothing noticeable just 12 hours ago in that tray of seedlings. Now there's several sprouts. It's ironic that we were talking about how long peppers tale to sprout. I just planted the seed a week ago (about 1/2 a day shy of a week actually). Now I'm VERY impressed with the heat mats. I'm not certain the light had anything to do with the germination, but these sprouts are not looking very leggy like the tomatoes were. I think adding a light source just before sprouting is ideal if there's not good natural light getting to the seed starts. This way the plants don't grow excessively looking for light and become leggy. With that said, I'm confident the tomatoes will still be fine now that they have light. They'll swell their stems and get sturdy in no time.

I should mention why I was over by the seed starter table to begin with. It's 2AM and I'm just awake. I'm sitting with my laptop and watching TV. My two Pekins are out in the middle of our yard and the drake is constantly calling. I live in suburbia so I have neighbors. While it wasn't necessarily loud enough to wake somebody, I was able to hear him so somebody else might. I decided to check what was going on. Nothing... absolutely nothing. He and his duck mate just standing there. No signs of other animals. I'm guessing he's a bit freaked out by cars/trucks going down the main road that's two streets over. In the silence of night you hear everything out there. It just so happens that the seed starts are on a folding table I set up right by the patio door I went to look out.

Yesterday was productive. Got one bed anemended and planted new strawberries. 50 bare root plants. The 4-H kid picked 2 smaller beds for their vegetable project and turned the soil. I added 6 strawberry plants that didn’t fit in my strawberry bed.

we planted the two bare root Asian Pear trees. @WthrLady, I’ve had a similar experience too, with size of the trees. Two varieties, both semi-dwarf. The diameter of the trunk is very different between the two, but the height is the same (and shorter than I expected...but when you add the roots, I guess then as tall as I expected. But, if they are alive and like the spot we placed them, then they should be ok. I haven’t called the company yet to ask my questions.

I cut up the potatoes to cure for a few days. Like @BReeder! We will be getting a lot of rain over the next few days. I figure if I get the beds turned over, amended and ready for potatoes, then I can just stick them in the ground when there is a window of opportunity. We have white, red, and yellow potatoes. This will be a lot of potatoes, as it will be more than I have planted in the past.

seed starts are looking good. I’ll need to replant a few bc they got very leggy. Some are taking their time to sprout, but most have popped up.

we got 2 clear panels up over the run, extending the roof 6 more feet. We have more to go, but need to built out the supports a bit more. in the end, they will have 50’ x10’ of covered run. We plan to expand the run a bit, but any expansion won’t have a roof.

Morning . I planted asparagus roots and strawberry roots yesterday . Rain coming today through Saturday . Should start about 11 AM they say . I will try to get some outdoor stuff done before the rain starts . I need to cut the plywood for my bait hives . So much to do this time of year . I have more tomato seed sprouting .

Good morning gardeners. I'm pretty much in the same "boat" as you are @BReeder! However, I only have a little less than 3 yards of dirt in my driveway. I still have snow tryin g to melt so no dragging heavy buckets of dirt over that for awhile. I have a question about potatoes. I bought a bag of potatoes last month and just noticed that a couple of the potatoes are growing roots. I was considering planting potatoes in a container, so if I cut one of these up and let it dry out a bit, can I plant it in a few days? My cucumbers finally germinated, so now I'm only waiting on the jalapenos. I haven't planted the poblanos yet. Perhaps today is the day for that. With all the stress of the pandemic, I haven't been as productive as I could have been. So today I'm back to setting daily goals. That should help me get back in sync. This is the busy time of year for most of us with our gardens and baby chicks arriving, so I really need to get it together. Thanks for the pictures as always @TropicalBabies. It's nice to be reminded of what a tomato ripening on the vine looks like. I'm so happy to hear your bees are doing well @WthrLady. Have a great day everyone and get those hands dirty!

@Wee Farmer Sarah, yes you can cut/cure/plant your potatoes. Some of my seed potatoes were growing sprouts, but I cut them up and have high hopes for a good crop.
