What did you do in the garden today?

Got a new feeder set up today, scrubbed out the water containers, and put new shavings in the nesting boxes. Rehomed Jules the cockerel šŸ˜ž. Admired the tulips and wild violets and other flowers popping up. Put some chicken wire over top of a section we planted where the chickens want to build a new dust bath šŸ™„. Checked on my started seeds. Got some marigolds popping up!

Supposed to be a nice day. I haven't been out yet, but it is sunny and forecast says high 65 / low 43. That's a very nice Spring day here. It's still not my personal ideal temp of closer to 80, but I'll take it for being March still. I'm going to go out and transplant the kale and brussels sprouts. I might some wire fencing up too. I have quite a bit to put up over existing wood fence to keep the rabbits out. I also need to build gates for the garden. I built a new garden fence last year, but never got around to building the gates. I'll probably run to menards to grab a few boards and then get that done too. I don't have a tunnel or I would plant lettuce already. Maybe I'll if I can come up with something from things we have laying around.

So was planning to take a day off, but this morning one of my pullets got killed by something. So will be dealing with my second dead body of the week (can't forget about Mr. Opossum). Then I need to figure out what to do about the fact I have one 7 week pullet left with only adult hens for company...and they haven't really accepted her yet. They just tolerate her. *Sigh.* She's inside watching a Bible movie with the kids right now because she was calling for Penny...who can't answer anymore.😭😭

I also need to figure out sleeping arrangements tonight...don't want Lassie to have to sleep alone, but also not sure putting her in the main coop is a good idea. Maybe I can put a smaller enclosure inside the coop? Ugh. Not how I wanted to spend Sunday.

Sorry, I guess that isn't garden-related, but that's what I've got going on today.

Happy second day of Spring everyone. Friday was spent at the car dealership. DD picked out a new car and after she closed the deal I told the sales person that I would take one as well. That made his day. I lease my cars so every 3 years I get a brand new car and there's very little maintenance required. Yesterday was mostly spent recuperating from the long day. I did roll my fig tree out of the garage. It's not as advanced as your tree @Sueby, but the leaves are starting to sprout. You were spot on @igorsMistress regarding the rosemary plants. I just repotted them and they were indeed root bound. I bought more attractive pots for them since they spend the cold months indoor. After lunch I will be tackling the chicken coop. In addition to the regular cleaning, I'll be taking the plastic off the run and installing another roost bar. I will likely be picking up the new car tomorrow so I will not get any gardening related task accomplished. I may repot my bay laurel before vacuum up the potting soil mess in the sunroom. Hopefully that will give the scraggly little thing a lift. Warm temps this week but going back to normal next week so will likely not try planting anything outside yet. I'm just enjoying the warmth while it's here.

This is good - they tolerate her! She won't be accepted until she begins to lay. I watch new chicks grow up - they stay in a group, then as the individuals get closer to lay, they are more accepted...once they lay, they are one of the big girls!

Yes, I would go for a separate coop cage for 4-7 days (or so, depending), and try to let them out first thing in the morning. Of course if you had no separate cage, just putting her in there would likely work ok, as long as there is plenty of extra roost space so she isn't perceived as being "disrespectful" of the pecking order and can keep a proper distance as required by higher pecking order girls. Good Luck and sorry one of the chicks was killed!

Happy Spring everyone! It’s a nice day here if a bit warm. Just got done with the duck pools, going to run to the pet store for feeder fish after we get milk. I’m digging a hole for the lilac bush and mixing some bunny poop with worm castings with the soil that I’m going to backfill with. Not much else in the garden right now. I had to tell my daughter that I’m not going to co-sign for a newer car for her right now so she’s not speaking to me and my FIL is in the hospital for some reason and was in ICU yesterday. Not sure what’s happening with him yet, hubs is talking to my MIL (his step mom) now. His mother had a bad fall not too long ago and that has put her in a wheel chair, so apprenticeship she’s no longer a nice dementia patient and has become quite vicious. My SIL is arranging to sell the house and put her in a home because she’s a lot to handle now and private care is too expensive. It should be ok to see her through, it’s two blocks from the beach in Huntington Beach and four blocks from the pier. Hubs is falling apart, having some really bad days with his knees lately so we’re hoping he’ll be ok until we have insurance. When it rains it pours I suppose. Anyway, sorry to ramble, have a good day all.
Prayers for you and yours. I know, some days, you get the bear and others, the bear gets you.

I’m happy to know that was the issue! A nice pot is definitely in order if they come inside too. I’d love to see a pic of what you got.

Rosemary gets huge for me here in the ground and aren’t too popular with the fowl so I’m thinking of adding a few to the landscape in the backyard. Plus they smell so good when you brush against them as you pass by. It’s just about my favorite herb to use in the kitchen.

Yesterday I ā€œfinishedā€ the stick fence. Aka I put a section of bird netting over the gap and said it was done. I just don’t have time to finish it after the insane week we had.
Nothing going on in the actual garden today. I got my garden planner finalized which is a relief. I feel a lot more confident than last year. Last year was a bit of a panic garden when we were worried we would lose our jobs which thankfully didn’t happen. We had had garden’s this size in the past but not for at least 5 years. This year I’ve got an actual plan for weed control and I’m not throwing things together 2 weeks before planting. Next weekend I’ll start building the trellises for tomatoes, peppers, beans and cucumbers. I should have just enough time to finish before planting.

They're feeder fish for her birds. LOL.

OK, How did I NOT buy cherry tomato seeds? Adding it to the list for HomeDepot tomorrow. Good grief.
I have been all over town looking for cherry tomato plants- none here. Guess Home Depot is the next stop- it is 30 minutes away.
