What did you do in the garden today?

Oops! I forgot these pictures. The Fritillaria in bloom and one of the Impatien blossoms that just opened this morning.
Love that fritillaria, it looks like a flower you'd find on another planet.

We got about a half inch of rain last night and it was chilly and cloudy till around noon but got quite nice after that. The chickens were fascinated by the squash plants I put out yesterday so I had to make some wire fencing caps to keep them out, then I dug out around the birdhouse post and planted the scarlet runner beans. Then I put up wraparound to keep both the chickens and cats out. Ran out of energy for now, but tomorrow I'll put up the rest of the fencing to give it a trellis up to the top of the post.

Made a big batch of quinoa salad and threw in everything but the kitchen sink, so yummy and healthy.

Did relatively nothing in garden today due to allergies. Had to do a little in the green house with new veggie plants but other then that I snapped a few photos and stayed inside developing a watering and fertilizing schedule form that can be left in each greenhouse and garden so I can keep better track of it all. This pic is of a Stellers Jay ( daddy) I think. They are here year after year, nest in the same place on a light at our kitchen door. They are not concerned with us and I think feel very safe here. Mom is sitting in eggs now. Each year I rescue at least one fledgling from a crow. I think these birds know were not gonna harm them. They get very close and seem to like hanging around us and our goats.

I'm pooped... Literally so exhausted that I can barely type. I did so much today I can't list it all. It's going to rain tomorrow and I'm leaving for Minnesota so I HAD to get stuff done.

I took someone's advice and put down mulch over the feed bag barrier in the garden. Hoping that works to block the light filtering through the white bags and kills the weeds. Looks good! I didn't get to finish the ENTIRE garden but I got it around everything that was important...

Oh yeah, and about the mulch. My old neighbor runs a tree service. About 2 weeks ago he brought me a giant load of free pine mulch. The pile is 8 - 10 ft long, by 5 ft wide, by 5 ft high! Today when I had DH shovel it into the wagon for the garden, we were both shocked to discover the mulch pile is hot composting already... Like, it was actually smoking and ashy on the inside! I didn't expect that at all!

Fresh mulch will do that. Just consider the amount of sap that's in there. Bacteria will certainly enjoy feeding on that. And the wood provide plenty of carbon.

Bummed, I went online looking for this awesome bulb and I’m not in the right zone for it. Prolly best, at over 26 bucks a bulb, I’d be dropping some serious coin to get a decent number of them. Please post more pictures for those of us who can’t grow them so I can live vicariously through your pics!

I’m sure that’s really frustrating Penny. We’ve had two rats and poison got them both and they both died in the shed. It’s kind of irritating that I have to use bins for kitchen scraps and a pile for everything else.

2 rats only? lucky you. the rats here consumed 3lb of poison and I had to by another 3lb pack which is going down rapidly. I am surrounded by fields and abbondoned houses.
