So are the pickled when you can them or more like a stewed tomatoe? And do you peel them like one would for canning ripe tomatoes.

We slice or chunk them up depending on the size and use the same brine as our pickles (no heat and no peeling) that helps preserve the crispness for frying. They are shelf stable due to the acidity of the brine but we also store them in the walk-in cooler as extra precaution

I got nothing done in the garden today. Boo.

We got the frame up on the addition to the run. Hooray!

Today's hooray beats today's boo by a long shot. Been wanting to get started on the run extension for a couple weeks now.

I just hope the beans are still tender. Ok, I'll look at it this way... there will be more ready to pick tomorrow.

we built it in fall 2018.....i have to say it’s been one of the best additions to the property that we’ve done! garden veggies last much longer and it’s a world of difference in aging meat

I want one too! A walk-in cooler that is. Would solve sooooo many problems I have with food storage, especially when I we struggle sometimes to keep the RV tolerably cool for habitation. Maybe I can rig something in the shed given some time and a little electricity... Have to talk to some people about the odds of it.

Rained early this morning, supposed to rain again tonight so I didn't even water the garden. Which is good, because I've not been able to really bend over today. Sciatica kicked into high gear.

DH is getting it in his mind to make modular concrete garden beds. Might be significantly more affordable than other options given the price of lumber. I'm plotting whether I can get a big enough shipping crate from someplace to have insta-coop. Lol.

That's a lot of concrete. Cinder block should be cheaper.

Sciatica kicked into high gear.

Oh my goodness, yes!! I was crying in pain today because it was just so bad! I had to use my cane most of the day to deal with the storm damage (ripped off a quail pen roof, and I had to catch some) and do other chores. I still pushed myself to get steps in. It helped with the pain, but caused more at other times.

I would *love* a walk-in cooler. I don't really have anywhere to put one though.... thinking....thinking....hmmm.... I'm going to have to ponder that one for a while to figure out a solution.

I did a LOT of work in the garden today. It was SUPPOSED to rain today. It did rain a little while we were at church but not enough to really soak into the ground too much. Everything is a dustbowl. Grass is pretty much dead. Pond is super super low....it's down at least 8 ft. The garden is still doing somewhat ok but only because I've been watering it every other day.

Anyway, I pulled a bunch of weeds. I haven't really weeded much since I put the garden in back in March. My poor man's weed fabric (recycled feed bags) and mulch have done a great job of keeping the weeds to a minimum. However, what weeds DID make it through had grown up quite a bit. Still, I bet I spent only about 10-15 minutes to weed everything. Not bad....my kind of weeding! One downside though is that the squash bugs LOVE the mulch. Gives them perfect camo and places to hide/burrow. Grrr..... I spent at least 15 minutes hunting for squash bugs and throwing them in a cricket can. Since the chickens won't eat them, I've been throwing them in the pond to the turtles & fish.

I planted some seeds for a fall garden today - sweet corn, bush beans, japanese eggplant, and some cosmic carrots. I have some purple cauliflower but no where to really plant them in the hoop house. I want to keep the cabbage moths from getting them. So I think I'm going to create some self-watering 5 gal buckets and do them in there.... Those will be easier to walk around inside the hoop house.

The REAL chore DH and I did today was to chop up and freeze all the produce that was stacking up on our countertop. I think I chopped up at least 10 lbs or more of peppers. Got some hot pepper juice on my wrist (yes, I was wearing gloves) so now it's super itchy.... We chopped up - carrots, squash, eggplant, red & green peppers, anaheim peppers, jalapenos, peach sugar rush peppers. Haven't gotten to the tomatoes yet but DH wants to make some more salsa. Oh! Speaking of tomatoes....most of my tomatoes are planted inside my hoop house. However, the ones I picked up from the clearance rack a few weeks ago were planted in the open garden. And it appears the deer have found them! The tops are all gone, chewed off.... They haven't touched anything in my garden until now.... Well, and my green onions. I had one solo green onion that is also gone. So now i gotta figure out what to do about it. I do have a solar charger and could probably rig up some electric fence but that seems like a lot of work for a few months. I thought about putting up some pie pans or a wind chime or something that might move and scare them.... Anyone got any good ideas?
