Oh, I didn’t think of that? I’ve seen other people do it. I plant directly in the ground too. Or in pots outside after the last frost. I never get around to starting indoors so I never do it.I generally use the pressed paper starter cell trays. I try to avoid using any peat containing products because peat is not sustainable. I do have the flimsy plastic cells that came with the tray and dome sets. I haven’t used or tossed them because they are not recyclable. I’m hoping these more rigid plastic starter cells work since they seem to be re-usable. I’m lazy and I just buy my starter mix. I’ve been doing more direct seed planting than starting indoors the last two seasons. My other set of hoops arrived the other day and they are rigid but have a nice height. These will help with seeding more a little early outdoors. I would not use empty egg shells to start seeds myself @The Truth Is Out There. Even clean egg shells have their own special aroma.
What about using paper bags?That works and is great for calcium loving plants like tomatoes. Melons will outgrow an eggshell or other small start quickly and don't like their roots messed with so repotting multiple times is out of the question. I need one large starter pot that I can plant directly in the garden.
Yes, agree about the mold. I had this problem too. Someone (I forget who) suggested spraying the outside of the tube with diluted bleach which will stop the mold in its tracks. I have some peat pots and manure pots I am going to try to use this year. If they mold, we'll see if the bleach works.
As for the bottom, you'd cut, dampen, and fold just like the toilet paper rolls. No tape required.
MOLD! Paper bags won’t work they will get moldy just the same. Scratch what I said!Yes, agree about the mold. I had this problem too. I find the best deal on them at the Dollar General of all places.
They also use spagnum moss, which can be SOMETIMES purchased at the big bog hardware stores. They don't always carry it, even year to year.
You CAN find it at the craft stores Hobby Lobby JoAnns and the like, but it's NOT cheap there.
======
Turned my head last night reaching for the skillet and a crystal shifted in my inner ear and spent the whole of last night with vertigo. Does NOT happen often, but I DO NOT like it.
4.5 hours later I got it to shift to where it's not a problem, but grrrrr
Today, I'm just hanging out at home anyway, cold, windy, and managed all the chores just fine.
If you want some noodle making eye candy, check out this woman's work space and the orchard dry stone wall her husband is making.
Hens are enjoying the lentils. Rooster acts as if he not only found them, but he shopped for them, and sprouted them too!
Chia still going strong.
Have a great day all.
