What did you do in the garden today?

That could be helpful for the lawn, but is it going to make a difference for containers? Most of my veggies are in garden boxes, the rest are in pots and hanging planters. I’d love to keep the helpful nemas alive in my containers indefinitely but I would expect the outdoor ones to freeze and the indoor ones to eventually run out of bugs to eat and starve. But if I can avoid them dying off that would be spectacular.

He was just saying if the soil conditions are supportive for the nematodes then they'll thrive vs. keeling over before they get a chance to work. I'm not sure about container gardening, but I don't assume any soil is perfect at any time until I get some test results to support that.

I have 3 jar type fly traps set out plus a bucket of doom for the maggots. Trying to control the population.

I do bush as the pole beans do NOT like our heat, humidity, or WIND. I get far more yield from them when they are bush.

Finally caught up!

My sweet corn is now over 9' tall. A few are making tassels without ears. But yesterday I saw at least two plants with ears developing! One of them has three! So I'm not going to rip it all out just yet.

I finished the irrigation on two more beds. One left. It's been in the high 90's every day so it's slow going. Friday is supposed to hit 107. Which means it'll probably hit 113. Most of my area is forecast for 110°+. We're supposed to go to the lake tomorrow through Sunday. So I need to set up misters for the chickens, move all my pots that I hand water to the garage (swamp cooler in there, plus mostly dark) and finish the drip lines today.

I have a ton of green tomatoes, tons of peppers, and tons of tomatillos. Now if only the cucumbers would get the message.

We've been changing the hummingbirds feeder every day. Trying to decide if I'm taking it down during our absence. I feel bad since it's going to be so hot, but we won't be here to change it. I think it's best to remove for a few days.

I don't want to go. It's going to be miserable... And honestly, I don't want to be miserable on my birthday. I feel selfish, but I may come home to water and check on the animals. I would just stay home if I could. Truck has no AC... Starts without bypassing the TIPM now at least, it's taken my DH 5 years to fix that. Now it's time for the AC, I had to drive it as my primary vehicle for a whole year without AC. Now he's gotten a taste of what it's like, but still putting it off, somehow. I'm close to blowing a gasket. Also, I want a different truck. Mine only tows 8600# but I need 14k. Shopping for a toy hauler, all the ones that fit our toys plus us, the kid and dogs are 9k+ dry.

Ya it is. LOL That said. My bushes are thigh high and I have them against a cattle panel for support with our winds.

G'morning gardeners. @Minanora I understand your feeling of guilt. We are so hot here, mid to low 90's at night and we're seeing 115-116 every day in the seven day forecast. I hope you can find a way to enjoy yourself! Nothing outside today, had a job interview and it's too hot to go out there now. Everything still looks pretty good though so I think it'll be ok to wait and water tomorrow. I remember being concerned that the planters I used these water cell things in would hold too much water. I am happy with the results though, excess water does drain out and seeps under the edge of the planter. I have used my moisture meter before watering, but usually the plants will tell me they need water based on their appearance. Chickens are doing ok, but our temps are so hot it's scary. I feel a lot of guilt about keeping chickens right now. I think I need to get some extra containers to freeze more ice blocks, going to talk about that with hubs when he gets home today. Have a safe and happy 4th everyone!

Morning. I went out & trimmed my cucumbers like crazy. I don't normally, but the urge hit me. I was armed (lol, literally) with my new garden sleeve, that thing is awesome. I usually come in with rashes all over, not today! Tomorrow I do the spaghetti squash. That should help keep the powdery mildew at bay for a while.

I'll go back out at break & throw it all a little water.

Cinnamon milk: 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 c milk,1 c water. Mix and strain into a spray bottle. It treats powdery mildew and black spots.

That's insane. We're staying in triple digits until next week sometime. At 8 am it's already time for the AC.

Temperature is ramping up here. High of 86 tomorrow, and Sunday 98 degrees is forecasted. Kind of hot for the Pacific Northwest.

I created shade for my peas by placing boards above the vines. With the gaps I left between them I'm guessing the boards are blocking around 70% of the sunshine.
I'll try to post a pic later.

Right now the peas are in prime production mode. Hopefully the shading will keep the plants cool enough that they don't get stressed. I might even spray them with water during the heat of the day to cool them off.

ETA: It's later now... I need to replace the wide piece of cement board with narrow boards.
