Lol used to be in Illinois considered a big problem in field corn. Now an old use is back in Vogue

I had an ear of corn smut appear in my garden 30+ years ago. Huge, grey... I thought it was a wasp nest!

Well, here is a pic, 2 cobs, 1 cob was the smutty one. Didn't appear appetizing to me, but chickens devoured it no problem.

Picked more tomatoes & some corn after work. It was warm & sunny earlier but at 4pm it was very cloudy, breezy & there was a nip blowing in from the northeast. I actually put on a flannel & then a hoodie. I'm washing & crating eggs & blanching corn cobs to freeze.

Most of the corn is gorgeous but 1 ear came out a bit funky. Here's a pic...a couple of oddly shaped kernels. Maybe I should invest in a Geiger counter . I'm Not blanching that weird ear...Nope.

summer coming back here. planted a palm tree, yucca, trumpet vine and some other climbing vine and about 40 aloe vera. a front corner of my plot has very poor soil.
