What did you do with your flock today?

Today I said goodbye to my chickens. Due to a situation of domestic violence I had to leave the house two days ago.

I'm trying to find a place to take them with me but all I'm able to afford are small apartments. People who have chickens as pets will understand how heartbroken I am... I already miss them...
I'm sorry to hear that. Im sure your chickens helped you through some tough times, but getting yourself somewhere safe and putting your oxygen mask on first is what is required. Maybe you can post an add, or post on byc for your location and get them safely rehomed. When you get your feet underneath you, chickens may find their way back into your life.
Stay strong and don't quit b4 the miracle. We all deserve to live with dignity.

I just put together a grit dispenser for the run. I found a little 1.5 gallon trash can for 97 cents that should work perfectly. I'll need to place some kind of angled cover on it to keep the chickens off the top but that'll be easy. It will match the larger white trash can I'm using as my gravity feed dispenser! I bought another one that I'll use as an oyster shell feeder when the time come for that. IMG_0934.JPG IMG_0935.JPG IMG_0936.JPG

I also picked up a bag of chicken scratch when I was shopping. 40# for about $17. I guess that's a reasonable price. Only three ingredients- cracked corn, whole milo and whole wheat. Probably ok, isn't it?

Allright! The chickens are officially out of the coop and living full time in the run. I moved their water and food into the run, along with the new grit dispenser. I upgraded their roosting situation, too. They seem to like the new layout!

Now I can work on the coop at my leisure. They'll need nest boxes by late July so I need to build and install those. I think I want to add another ventilation opening at the top of the north wall too. I'll need to make a chicken door through the run side of the coop for their access to the nest boxes, and so they can roost in the coop in cold weather.

And they didn't care for the scratch grains I bought them. I think I'll try fermenting some and see how they like it that way.

There may be a shelter for women of domestic violence in your area. We have one near us that we donate eggs too as they need them. It sure does help them get back on there feet.

Sat outside with some of flock for grass time. Unfortunately we have too many predators to let free range. They do have a 3000 square foot aviary but they got it down to dirt. Plan is to section it out and start turf rebuilding.

Also got some pictures of the 8 week olds. One of the boys worked on his crow.

I'm so sorry and really empathise with your situation. The important thing is for you to be in a safe space. It takes a lot at courage to leave an abusive relationship, as you already know. Leaving your chickens behind must be so hard. I can't imagine how terrible you feel. But you had no choice and mustn't feel guilty, your safety is paramount. Just know that things will get easier in time.
Do you have anyone who might take them in temporarily?

Sounds absolutely fine for scratch! Obviously you'll be feeding alongside their main food so it'll be good.
