What did you start off with?

There has probably been other threads made like this but I am kinda interested to know what type of poultry other members started with. My dad had been getting chickens and had a coop on the property for years before I was born but the first birds I remember was a batch of 25 RIRs and 25 white rocks. What were your first birds? (talking about poultry)

I grew up on a commercial chicken farm getting thousands of broilers every 9-ish weeks

I had a class room hatched chick when I was only 12. I have no idea what kind it was, we moved into a no poultry area and I had to give her up unfortunately.

Then we got 3 chicks in 2004, a couple of Easter eggers, and a barred rock. Maybe my real first? But that lovely chick from the classroom sparked my love of them.

My dad got me turkeys when I was 2 year old. Lol
Since then, now I’m up to: swans, quail, chickens, cranes, and pheasants.

I won a rooster when I was about twelve.... at a raffle.... Dad was not so happy little Reprobate flew the fence a couple of times and he had to go round him up. We live in the city... He was raised on a farm. Mom was tired of the roo. He wrung its neck and cleaned him she Pressure cooked him... Chicken and dumplings were great.

Mom swore off chicken for a while.... I didnt get chickens for myself till I was thirty...

So I started off for real with Easter Eggers... Six Chipmunks from the feed store... VEry hale and hearty hens... Each a different color... I really liked that.

Probably my early experience is why I am so pragmatic about loosing one.
