What do folk think about Dogs in the bedroom?

I have been told the best way to stop my dog wanting to go out to pee and poo in the middle of the night or have accidents is to let him sleep in my bedroom?
I have had dogs for over 30 yrs and never had one sleep in my room. Even when we are away in the caravan the little dog slept in the bathroom. Our pup is never alone as he has the little dog and the cat with him and I am certainly NOT having all three of them romping about on my very expensive silk bedding - ??? I think I would rather put up with him whinning to go out to pee than have him slobber and chew my bedroom up! Not that our dog does a lot of chewing but I am not about to get a smaker of a kiss from a big hairy mammoth who likes to eat his own poo!
I have known lots of folk who end up with aggression issues over who actually owns the bed? Also thoughts of the woman in France who had her face tor off comes to mind. I am not anti dogs in bed if others feel the need but for me it is not where it is at. I personally would rather have a living breathing man in my bed! ( DH) than an oversized fur ball with bad breath!

Oes - any thoughts ??

Our dogs sleep in our bedroom, but never on our bed. We have several dogs beds for the three dogs.
I like knowing I'm "protected" and if any of the girls have a problem, we are right there.

Does your dog actually need to go potty in the middle of the night? Or is he just wanting to go outside and play and get attention?

If he really needs to go potty I would change his feeding schedule around. If you work out a good feeding schedule and stick to it with no snacks then they should start going potty like clock work. If it is just to go outside then I would completely ignore him until he stops doing it. Get a crate and crate train.

I have four dogs and they all sleep in my room. My very old cancer-ridden pug gets to sleep on the bed but the other three sleep in a large dog bed on the floor. They know better than to try to get in bed. It may take a few nights of irritation while you train them but then they will stick to the rules after that.

Our dog sleeps in my bedroom! Actually, he usually sleeps in my bed. There is a dog bed in there, but he still wants to sleep on the bed. Occasionally, he'll sleep in his bed if the cat isn't in it. Sometimes he'll even sleep in the cat's bed!

my dogs have always slept in the bedroom. Not on the bed though.
Except when we spent the night in the hotel during an obedience trial. I had no where to put him while we were carrying in luggage, so I had him sit on the bed. Of course, a freshly washed dog is probably cleaner than most things that go on a hotel bedspread

He never tries to get on the bed at home - he knows it's not allowed. But he did sleep most of the night on the bed at the hotel. At least until I kicked him out. He snores and likes to jump on the bed

I have a devil of a time making them move over if they go to bed before I do. No, not joking. They will also move in on our napping territory. If they find me on the couch, they will have to join me.

One was actually born on the bedroom floor. He's an old man now, with some health problems, and I cherish every night he sleeps with me. No, they're not small dogs. The old man is a 90 lb. brown lab. The snuggler who sleeps under the covers is a 50 lb. American black and tan coon hound.

And I can't imagine it any other way. ^_^

Our dog sleeps in our bed. It has not made her any less obedient or any more aggressive. If a dog has owner-aggression issues, there is more going on than a pure issue of furniture.

For your case though, why have a dog in the bed unless you want one there? I'd crate train, or work on other routine based methods.

I have had times in my life where the dogs slept on the bed.. and others where they didn't.. just depends on who I was married to at the time and if they allowed the dogs on or not..
Right now there are 11 dogs staying with us (doggy sitting for some of the guys who are serving in Afghanistan with my husband).. out of the 11 dogs only my Eskie pup sleeps on the bed. But occasionally my husband's shepherd sneaks up onto the foot of the bed. All the rest either sleep in their crates or on the floor.. and a couple have claimed the old couch.
I have also had dogs who would steal my pillow and loved to lay with a blanket over them on cold nights.

I agree.. I have never had obedience or aggression issues or any other problems (other than the dogs sprawling out before I could get my spot.. lol). Even when I raised Dobermans and had 12 adult Dobies attempting to steal the king sized bed I never had aggression issues. And if I told them to get off the bed.. they would.

We don;t have any aggression issues at all with Bailey so I guess I certainly don;t want to start one inadvertantly? He did used to pull Giz from his bed and pee on it! So I was thinking - didn;t want that in my room! Giz now sleeps the other side of the baby gate but still in view of Bailey. This works better as they can see eachother but Giz still gets a good sleep.

Dh - would NEVER have a dog on our bed! I am with him on that one as our lovely cat has a habbit of bringing home unwanted guests! So the last thing I need is a flea ridden oes on the quilt! The cat is allergic to anti flea which makes for an interesting life - he gets shots from the vet instead! So do the dogs now but still I find the odd one!

Bailey does go to the toilet in the night. - we don;t have room for a crate so thats not going to work here. however I have tried with rescheduallying feeding times. Here is how it usually pans out. Feed as early as possible Am which is about 730-9am depending on disability care needs. - Second feed 5-530pm which is easier to pin down to a time! lol Mornings are manic.
So he should have plenty of time to evacuate whatever is in his belly. right?

I do think he was trying it on with DH though in the night as when he heard DH doing our disabled son that was his signal to "I want out!" - so it got a bit of a pattern I think. Like reasurance in the night that someone was there? Anyhow last night I told DH to ignor him and not let him out.

This is what happened. - Went down at 6.30.am - totally dry dog and no poo ( or sign or smell of poo that may have been consumed by a guilty party? )

Give dog megga praise. Let him out to the yard and stand with him he has a massive peeeeeeee that lasts forever. more praise

He goes into the big yard ( He hasn;t figured out that I want him to do everything in the one big yard ( However with bad chilling wind and freezing weather the nearer worked out more convenient for this ailing asthmatic so my fault!) We get to the big yard he is excited and wants me to follow - we get to the yard and he immediately poos when I say go poo then!

I am extatic and give lots of praise. Giz has followed and taken the oportunity to do his own pee and poo while the woolly mammoth has been distracted. - we go back inside out of the bitter wind ( I am still in my PJs)

I give both dogs megga praise and a treat each. - then I settle to make coffee and Tea for DH and I. - I head up the stairs and we watch the news.I get dressed and showered - less than45 mins later I bring the cups down and hear a bark - I think oh well I will let him out again? - But as I open the door of the Kitchen I already know - ????? ( This is all before HE gets his morning feed!)
There on the floor behind Bailey is another Poooo and he is looking really PLEASED WITH HIMSELF presenting me with this early morning love gift!

I open the door and he goes out and immediately does yet another massive peeeeee - I pick up his missplaced poop on a scoop and trail after him to the big yard where I dump it with the earlier one in front of him. - We go in he does not get treats or praise. - I am defeated! - Half an hour after this I hear him cry again and let both Giz and Bailey out. he does another peeeee and I am thinking is his bladder really this big or is he doing it for more treats because it isn;t going ot happen - !

At least with this mornings love gift he managed to keep the pee outside - so I didn;t have to mop too much! Other mornings he manages to try to drown me as well!

Will he grow out of this?????? When we are out sometimes he poops but I don;t get annoyed because clearly he cant get out to the yard if we are not here. Recently he has had a few more peee accidents and tells me "after the event" not before

He is 7 months now - is this just age related -?

I don;t beleive having him in my bedroom will be of any real advantage for him or us. I really don;t want to go down that road. A lot of folk here keep their dogs outside - I don;t! and Bailey does get to go into other parts of the house under supervision. We are working on evenings where the boys can sit with us and watch TV etc. Yesterday pup didn;t get his evening walk as when I went to get him he was out cold on the floor. He actually slept the night too which is good but I think it is another growth spirt he is getting very big very quick. Then he gets tired and just doesn;t want to do much - it passes though in a day or so. and then I notice he is "bigger" - Though then he doesn;t seem to want to sleep at all but sits at the baby gate like a centry on guard!
Giz and Bailey are only seperated at night and when we are not here. We had to do that as Giz was getting hurt by the pup. Not aggressively but because the pup keeps "sucking him"! Giz has lost his hair down both sides? It has been over a month and nothing is growing back?
It is now 8-50am and I hear another bark- I am thinking should I rush down and open the back door expecting yet another flood or is he just being annoying? I feel like a yo yo!

It is wearing ! Gave in and went down let him out and he immediately did another massive wee. I have now fed and watered and am fully aware I just filled the TANK again!

I have 3 dogs. 2 labs and a cockapoo. The Cockapoo is 16 lbs, is an indoor dog, and sleeps in the bed. The 2 labs live outdoors.
