What do you consider an animal hoarder?

I knew this woman with like, 30 guinea pigs, and it was because she wouldn't get them fixed or separate the males from females or get them new homes, etc. because she never had any money or made time for them. Her mom said she was a hoarder. I wasn't so sure, but I guess by your definition, it is true. Sad, really.

anyone with more than 20 animals and he does include farmers

Just wrong, that's all.

I agree. There was a lady down where we used to live in Kansas that bought a lot of really cheap horses just because she could to save them from slaughter but then she could not afford to care for them properly:( I'm not going to start a fight but in this situation I felt like they would have been better off slaughtered then starving at her place.

She thought she was saving the world and didn't see anything wrong with it.

he does include farmers

I just gotta ask, though, how the heck are you supposed to really FARM with fewer than 20 animals? It'd have to be a teeny operation for sure

Yeah tell me about it! I have since...er...educated him. ;-)

Yeah...no, we don't have a dog house and I won't make the chickens sleep with him in the barn. ;-)

I classify a hoarder as someone who either takes on way more than they can handle (like that lady on one of those Animal Cops shows that had like 80 cats in the basement!

) or someone who cannot say no to every stray, drop-off and wandering animal that crosses their path. Not the ones that actually rehome them, but the ones that keep every single one of them, possibly even some that are just lost from home

I knew a lady once that would take in "stray" cats and never let them out of her house again... some of those strays weren't strays, but neighbor's cats that wound up captured!

Hrm.. 20 animals? That could be a problem. I have more lambs than that every year..

Is that 20 per person in the house??

I agree with the other. If you can't afford them, you shouldn't have them.

A hoarder is someone who takes in more animals than they can care for and continues to add more and more while allowing the ones they have to reproduce and no access to vet care.

A classic example is a guy in town. He has 20+ cats (this winter) and none are fixed. The house reeks when you walk up to it. The house is flea infested and since the neighbors have said they would start shooting the cats, he no longer allows them outside. I have written the local Sherriff, Humane Soc, Social Services and the City Council. No one will help! He continues to search "free" ads and takes in more!

I just dont know what more I can do. The guy is mentally disabled and thinks its funny he is a "cat collector"

A friend of mine used to have a "dream" of owning a pet store...she went ahead and got ALL sorts of little critters so she would "have what she needed to start this business" and be all set. Spent an ungodly amount of money too...with buying all the cages too. Well she had ferrets, GP's, hamsters, rabbits, Those things that take dust bathes (forgot their names), and SO many other things. Her whole upstairs was full of them (which is also where their bedroom was) OH did it smell! The animals were almost always out of water and food and they NEVER took them out of their cages. When she had babies that she could not sell she would freeze them and throw them away!

She said that way they would not feel pain? Umm OK! Anyway...I think this describes a hoarder?

I think that a hoarder is, obviously and as many of you have already stated, someone who has more animals than they can care for properly....and they are not living in reality. A true hoarder has a real psychological complex. They do not see that what they are doing is wrong (it's usually harmful to the animals and themselves) and they keep collecting, obsessively, even though they cannot house/afford/feed, etc., the animals.

I agree, you can't just put an arbitrary number on it. I hatch more than 20 chicks in one go....
