What do you consider an animal hoarder?

My sister is a classic hoarder but provides enough feed for some, not enough for others, water for some, no water for others, vet care for some, none for others. She can't/won't kill, or cull, sick or suffering animals, has no proper housing for the larger stock, not enough proper fencing for her large property, so is always looking for their cattle, sheep, horses, etc. They can't stop buying, incubating, breeding (with no program), or collecting. Classic bipolarism for both her and her husband....compulsive buying without funds to care for said purchases. I can't keep accurate track of the count now, as it fluctuates daily, particularly on Wednesdays.....livestock auction doing business that day! They have no housing or good fencing but are going all the way to Arkansas next week for some large black hogs and to Ohio for yet another Highland bull. They have no pasture (eaten down to a nub), very little water (last year the cattle were drinking their own urine from their tracks), no way of cutting their sparse hay fields, no shelter for these hogs, kept their lambs in a horse trailer......well, you get the picture! If I told you of the suffering and dying that goes on at their farm you would cry! She is right up the rectum of the local animal shelter and fosters and adopts animals from them on a regular basis...so don't advise to report her, it won't work! THAT, my friends, is a hoarder! She has dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, pigs, sheep, assorted cattle, horses and the number grows daily....

I can't say I've heard the term hoarder but I have known some.

I knew a person that "rescued" animals. She got in trouble with the law for "rescuing" a dog she thought wasn't being cared for properly. In reality she stole the dog. She had quite a few dogs living in dirt, didn't clean up after them, and some of the dogs were unapproachable. Their living conditions were pretty bad. Then she wanted to rescue horses. She couldn't even care for the horse she was responsible for. She was living rent free taking care of a house and the horse.

This person was abused by her former husband and maybe even by her father. I heard somewhere that many people that "rescue" animals and don't or can't care for them properly have abuse in their backgrounds and the animal thing is some sort of reaction.

Now realize I did not say all nor did I insinuate that anyone in this forum fits that situation. I don't know you folks so I can't say any of you are like that.

As far as Asher's husband's definition. I guess I might be a hoarder. I have 59 chickens and a cat. Had 8 new chicks show up today with a hen that had been AWOL.

I'm quickly becoming appalled

I'm gonna go re-check the water of all of my animals even though I just changed it out two hours ago.

I guess under the 20 animals or more I am definately a hoarder than....

We have
3 dogs
5 cats
11 kittens
37 sheep
4 llamas
6 geese
13 ducks
50 chickens
7 turkeys
1 turtle
200+snails
30 fish
6 pot belly pigs
1 feeder pig (lost 2 just recently)
1 goat
3 peacocks
1 guinnea
7 rabbits
2 daughters
1 husband
an incubator with eggs....
and there has to be more animals but I just can't think of them right now...

So I guess I would be a hoarder than....

But really my animals ALL of them are very well taken care of...
They all are given fresh water 2 times a day..Plus fill ups on the water a couple times a day. All the pasture grass in the summer they can eat. Hay and grain in winter (a little in the summer). Treats. Swimming holes. Lots of love and attention. All are very people friendly. Barn, pens and cages cleaned weekly (if not a quick clean daily). They are spoiled pets/livestock/animals.
My kids and husband say the animals live and eat better than they do....hahahahaha

I always think of hoarders as those that actually live in the filth that the animals make. They are those that have a need to save all the animals but they don't have the mental capacity to know how to care for, clean up after or provide for the animals they claim to love.
