I've ended up with 5 chickens (hopefully hens).
1 RIR
1 Black Australorp
1 Barred Rock
1 Red Sex Link (who I think is really a RIR)
1 Giant Buff Cochin

I mainly got them for pets but was able to finally convince DH into them when he realized how much I was spending for fresh eggs at the farmer's market. I'm also thrilled to have something to eat the bugs from the garden AND the free compost they create!

I never thought I could love a chicken as much as I love my babies!

I've got EEs that I breed because they're so friendly and cool and beautiful and lay such pretty eggs. I've got Buff Orps that I breed for the same reason although their eggs may not be quite so pretty to some. Rhode Island Reds-see BO explanation. We have an assortment of birds that I do not breed but they're pretty and they lay lots of eggs to feed my large family. We just butchered our first batch of Cornish X and I think from now on we'll be at some point of the cycle of raising Cornish roasters for meat.

Lets see:

10 weeks old: All pullets
6 White Rocks
3 Either production reds, or NHR.. don't think dark enough to be RIR

9 weeks old: Most pullets to my knowledge
6 EEs (One possible Roo)
2 Black Australorps (One is a Roo!)
2 Silver Laced Wyandottes
2 Black Sex Links
2 Production reds, or NHR...again, don't think dark enough to be RIR
2 Light Brahmas

4.5 weeks old: All pullets
3 White Rocks
3 Gold Sex Links

I got mine to provide eggs for the family, and hope to be able to sell a few eggs! I hope that with a rooster I won't have to keep buying new chicks every Spring. I bought the original 10 chicks as straight run, in hopes that I would have some roos for the freezer. That didn't happen. My dog killed one, and the rest were pullets!

I would love however to have a pair of Silkies, just for pets!
