What do you keep Quail for??

It is interesting people ask "why do you keep quail".

This is not the first post around this theme here.

But nobody asks "why do you keep chickens" or "why do you keep ducks" or "why do you keep dogs".

It seems to me that quail is such an exotic species for most . Many individuals probably never seen quail even pictured.

Is there any better explanation for this quite frequent:

WHY DO YOU KEEP QUAIL ? ? ? ?

They are enjoyable to have around, they don't eat much, and I see no reason not to keep them.

ILLEGAL AS WELL

No kidding. It rates right up their on my list of idiotic things to do along side releasing domestic duck on a pond or letting domestic rabbits lose. It's a death sentence for those animals. Since easter is coming, I have my have a heart trap ready. I didn't get the trap in time to save the rabbit someone up the street released last year, but the local fox had a good snack.

Why do I keep quail?

Well, I'd always wanted to have some quail just for fun. Happened to mention that to a friend of mine one day when she said they had some birds. A few months later, she asked if I wanted ALL of their quail - coturnix & buttons. Her husband wanted to get out of that. Of course, I jumped...quickly. They came with cages, equipment, etc. I later built more cages, however.

What I've learned & why I have them now:

Button quail - I like to listen to the boys. I also eat the eggs. However, the button quail are mostly psychotic eye candy. I will keep a few in the future, but not as many as I have now. As they die due to old age or other causes (such as committing suicide by flying into a wall when they escape) I won't replace most of them. I'll let them naturally go down to about 3 pair (instead of 15).

Coturnix quail - I just adore them. These are the type I always wanted to get. I love the noises the boys make (I'm nuts), the eggs, messing with them, etc. The only thing I don't like is how prolific they are with pooping. Oh, wait. I really don't even mind that. It's awesome for my garden!

Basically, I just really like my quail pets. The eggs are a nice bonus.

Excuse my ignorance! The reason we keep chickens is kind of obvious, BTW... Ducks are just cute and dogs are your best friend for life! So, sorry if I offened you by posting this. **Getting off my soap box**

I have another question...
Can you keep chickens and quail together?

Thanks to those of you who gave constructive answers!

Regarding the chickens and quail housed together. Please see the "biosecurity" topic, "showing Quail ...biosecurity again" topic, and you will see that we have disucussed it a lot. There are many topics on within the Quail part of the forum that will take you through the "cohabitation" debate in theory and practice.

Nice to see your interest in Quail. I am new to them and have had everything else too prior to now. Now my heart belongs to the Coturnix. Enjoy.

The reason we keep quail is kind of obvious: Quail is made out of meat covered with feathers, just like chicken, quail lays eggs (lots of them) just like chicken. Some people keep quail for pets, just like some keep chicken for pets.

Does it qualify as "constructive answer" now?
