What Do Your Ducks Do in the Snow?

I love knowing all of you have birds that stay out in all weather! I thought something was wrong with the house I had provided them when they chose to sit in the cold and rain.

The same things they do when it's not snowing they really don't seem to mind it. I will find a duck sized hole in the ice on the duck pool. They do hang out in their house when it's windy though, sunny or snowy.

I'm seeing this often. I think that in the extended run I sm going to put a dog house with straw for them.

I don't want thrm out all night because of predators, so I was hoping they would sleep with thd chickens--will they of can they do that?

I lock them in their own duck house at night to be secure from predators. I choose to have my ducks and chickens in separate runs with separate housing. There are some people that house them together. I think space is a big factor.

I'm now leaning to seperate living space and runs so the ducks can be as messy as they want. They can take a mud bath as long as they are not walking into my house...lol

We don't have chickens, so I'm no use there. I know people who have a large enough space to keep both together happily, and I also know people who keep them separately and then free range them together during the day.

In our run that is attached to the elevated duckhouse, they have the whole area underneath the duckhouse to use as well. I keep a nice thick bed of straw under there, and it's banked by straw bales. They build nests under there and use it frequently at night.

Each morning when we open the run, they have Soup for Ducks (NOT Duck Soup!) and then they then take us for a walk down to Duck Landing for some bathing.

This was my ducks first winter and I worried how they would handle the cold... turns out its no issue at all!
