What gender??

Okay! Time for a fun game of “what gender am I? I don’t know if 2 weeks is too soon, but the coloring patterns I have don’t feel very “wild type” and thus I am uncertain if they will be feather sexable or not?? I’m just curious on peoples thoughts and how it compares to mine I know 4 & 6 are not but included them cuz they’re cute haha.

Two weeks is too soon. Some of those aren't feather sexable, so you'll have to wait until they're at least 6 weeks old to tell with them.

Can you tell me the closest colors they match? They don’t seem to really fit any official colors that I can compare them too!

I was hoping I’d get at least a couple that will be feather sexable! I’m guessing they are a mix but wondering which ones I might have a chance at feather sexing? They’re going to be harder to watch laying eggs or crowing since I work all day...once they go outside. I don’t want to risk the females getting too beat up if I can avoid it! Thanks Nabiki!

Thank you!! I will definitely update you in a few weeks! Is a range pattern essentially a “mutt” of sorts—essentially a messy cross? What is the difference between a Rosetta and a Tibetan? Is it just a lighter brown? I’m trying to train my eye for what to look for but it’s tough cuz they don’t sit still at ALL! Took a lot of tries to get those pictures haha!

2,3 and 5 definitely looked like classic wild type as newborns, but I was thrown off by the lack of brown coloring. The tones are definitely more blacks and grays. Would a silver male crossed with a classic wild type result in a sort of diluted wild?

I am hopeful that you're right about gender...I would love to have a male silver to maybe breed with. He’s a strong little bugger for being smaller than the rest of them!

There are several patterns of Coturnix, 1 is the wild pattern, such as pharaoh and falb fee, then you have range, which would often be Tibetan, Rosetta, and scarlet, but any color can be any of the patterns, then there is Italian and manchurian, caused by the fawn gene, there are others like pansy, but that’s more complex because I think some breeders have pansy caused by a pansy gene, and some have pansy caused by a combination of other patterns that end up looking like pansy.

so to sum it up, Wild has stripes, range is solid, Fawn is speckled, and pansy is like big wide speckles. If I remember correctly, I believe Rosetta is Tibetan crossed with pharaoh, creating a more textured range pattern, adding barring and lacing.

2 And 3 are a wild pattern, it’s too soon to be sure, but they aren’t looking male yet. I can’t tell if they’re falb fee or pharaoh, it doesn’t look like they have much brown.

5 same as 2 and 3, I suspect it’s male, can you get a better front shot of the chest?

6 silver, looks like range pattern, not feather sexable.

tho 1 and 6 are not feather sexable, I suspect they are male. Let me know if I’m way off in a few weeks ok?

Thanks @muddy75, I suspected Grau fee, but it’s hard to tell. They are a really beautiful pattern.

2, 5 I would guess boys due to the amount of white feathers on the chest, but they could just be girls with less spots. Time will tell
3 I would guess girl, she has plenty of spots

Their heads look pretty yellow so I would say falb fee. It's wild color minus the red tones. You can tell them apart from pharaoh at hatch if you have both.

Ahhh, okay! That really helps! I took genetics about 20 years ago haha, but I’m fascinated by it and think it’s neat how quickly you can see the affects of selective breeding in quail.

The Rosetta is my very first quail, hatched first, is the biggest, and also most often is the one making loud cries. The lacing mixed with the dark brown is super pretty. I’m guessing male just based on watching his behaviors.

I don’t want to get your hopes up, take this with a grain of salt, but I think your Rosetta is female. I’ve been testing a crazy theory I have based on the shaft in the chest feathers, a more defined shaft I believe indicates male.

The first is a female, the shafts are less defined, the chest feathers give the impression of a smoother look.

This is the male, he has long, defined white shafts. Easier to see individual feather features:

I have very few wild patterns, but my egyptian male’s chest looked more like a sunburst, with the shafts being more defined, and I got to thinking this might be a very subtle male trait. I’m still testing it haha, so it could be crazy nonsense.

Interesting! I will try not get my hopes up but it would be pretty great to not have to rehome too many, especially my very first successful baby to hatch! The kids are also pretty attached to them all.

There is definitely a noticeable difference in the pics of your tuxedos. I think that’s a great hypothesis to test! I have 4 baby Celadon quail that are only 1.5 weeks old and will all be different patterning of tuxedo...I’ll have to post some of them when they get all feathered out so we can see if this helps me ID their gender too! The smooth white feathers are really pretty. I just love all the variations they all have. So neat!
