Alright! Checking in from the vet’s parking lot as we are about to begin our adventure home.

1.) she gave me stank eye the entire trip. Then! Decided to give me some more stink eye at the vet after anyone would pick her up and lookher over. She CLEARLY knew this was my fault and will not soon let me forget this.

2.) three. Three poops in 3 hours.

3.) she does not appreciate my singing of ANY of the following (forgive me for not knowing singers/proper titles... I like to keep it fresh and mysterious):

So Why Don’t You Stay
Anything Bob Marley
Funky Town
Anything Alaina Myles

She DOES approve of:

My Smalltown Murder Podcast
Ludacris (don’t judge her... she’s a gangsta)
Everything Tom Petty
And she really got down to Eye of the Tiger

4.) shes even more adorable when she’s pouting and mad (don’t tell her I said that).

I will update the things you ACTUALLY want to know when I get back home. Figured I would leave you with fond imagery while I fight biblical rains, Indiana roads of SHYTE, and equally bad drivers who, might I add, do not have the sheer fun of driving with a thrice shat duck in their immediate 3 feet vicinity :: eye roll::

And btw: I’m so glad I have leather. This stink would NOT be coming out of cloth.

Omg this post seriously got me laughing after a long miserable day! :highfive: thanks!

Alright. We’re home now. She’s back with her little rapey flock mate and are curiously quiet (plotting revenge I’m certain).

I can tell you with certainty that she lI he’s Tom Petty. She also REALLY liked Footloose. So much so that I expected a little ducky revolution in her turdy tote. She does NOT appreciate the lyrics to “take these broken wings” and “there’s gonna be a heartache tonight.” The latter? I can support her stance; maybe not the best vibe for 80mph, rain and semi’s.

On to the goods:

Her leg is (as previously expected) NOT broken nor dislocated. Just a sprain and is on its way towards healing. She wrote a little duck script for ducky leg sprain pain meds. She said it’s hust for her comfort.

The black hole of doom!? Even she has no idea what would have caused it and she said she dares not to venture any guesses on how long it’s been there (I geared up and asked if it’s recent-ish and I just sucked at ducky responsibilities to have noticed). She said whatever wound it originated as and/or *if* it resulted in much infection, is really unknown. She says all things considered, it looks really well. Says that for lack of swelling/redness or any goop coming out of it, it means her little ducky body is trying to, or has, been taking care of itself.

She prescribed a topical ointment (presumably an antibiotic or something... it’s called in to a local pharmacy alongside her little ducky drugs) and gave me some Hibiclens soaked gauze (I giggled because as mentioned in prior posts, I TOTALLY have that at home). Not going to lie (it was a sad/hectic day there as they had two emergency or trauma pets coming in at exact same time where one was getting CPR and another didn’t make it :( I have bad focus/memory so I was easily distracted) I can’t remember if I’m also getting an oral antibiotic but I *think* I might be. Basically got the run down of not eating her eggs for 8 days after last dose of antibiotic. Not a problem for me... hubs will just have to kick it like a commoner with store bought chicken eggs.

I’m supposed to pop a pill(s) down her throat once a day. Gently Scrub the wound with the Hibiclens gauze and then apply the ointment. *IF* no improvement in 2-3 weeks, she says it could be old enough that the hole is here to stay and it’s just going to get perpetually yucked up and so I can bring her back, they’ll flush it and maybe put a stitch or two. Obviously, they said, if it gets worse to immediately call them.

She said pulling that plug may have just helped her body have an easier egress for the gunk to go out. She says that the before pics made it seem bigger than what she was seeing today (acknowledging that pics aren’t the greatest tell) but she ALSO gave a throat gulping “yuck” when I gladly swiped to the death plug I removed. I said “I know! Share my pain!” (Okay I didn’t say that, but I did think it).

She was hesitant to go scrubbing around in there unless necessary. That whole thing of irritation/potential for spreading any bacteria unnecessarily. But, again, will do so if it doesn’t improve over next 3 weeks. She was trying to reassure me that OG is doing well and that ducks are resilient but I’m still on the fence about that.

These poor clumsy quackers sprain legs by sneezing, we’ve got vet mystifying (and gagging) black holes of doom and none of this even covers my poor Pekin (Lucy) who passed just 2 weeks ago. So I’m still giving the whole resilient term a side eye BUT I’m just glad the black hole of doom does not, according to the vet, appear life threatening or anything more serious than it is.

She weighs an ounce or two above 6 pounds so I told her I was gonna fatten her up. I was thinking because she’s supposed to be a Pekin and bigger... didn’t even consider the underlying threat of making her a table bird. She did not find it amusing.

Also! Tech said OG has the strongest beak clasp she’d ever encountered. She’d had one HELLUVA time trying to open her mouth in her “easy peasy” lesson to me on how to pop a pill.

Needless to say, I’m not feeling very confident about my odds here.

So! I have a few follow-up questions to ask you Ducky pros...

Is there a way to trick the duck into taking her pill? You know, like a piece of hotdog with a dog? But for ducks...? I’m not feeling so emboldened of my odds for success of popping pill(s) down this poor ducks’ throat.

Remind me why it is we’re not supposed to consume antibiotic-fed eggs?

And on that note; I hear people say they cook em’ up (the eggs, not the ducks..... rude) and feed them back to the ducks... can I do that if they’re antibiotic laced eggs? I’ll gladly pitch them to avoid problems but figured free protein is free protein.

Should I be trying to fatten her up? Doc didn’t seem concerned by her weight but lord that seems ‘small’ for such a notorious “meat bird”?

And do you think I should leave a radio with Tom Petty playing for her? Maybe Footloose on loop?

❤️❤️❤️

Pics are: her keeping her eye on me, her giving me stink eye in the vets office and her peeking up at sound of Footloose (ride home)

Encouraging news! :fl

I'm not a duck expert. I had to give one of my ducks a 12 day antibiotic course, though—4 pills a day, every day. Wasn't much fun. There was no way I could get my bird to consume the meds without prying that bill open, unfortunately. So I went ahead and tried it after asking Kathy and some others about a million questions, and it ended up working fine. Hopefully she's better at opening her bill for you than she was for the tech.

How precious those pics are.

Sounds like a good vet visit other than the stinky poop.
I was wondering if she maybe got impaled on a stick or something similar it fell out eventually but left the hole? Something we'll never know but so relieved to hear she is on the mend and hopefully with your care the hole will not need any thing more done than what your doing now with cleaning and meds.

I showed my dh the video about the quacking prehistoric animals and he laughed so hard, thank you for sharing that.

If vet wasn't concerned about her weight, then I wouldn't stress on it... each has their own natural weight, not all are as heavy as others... so as long as she is healthy and doesn't *lose* weight, I would just keep her on regular feed diet...

Fyi, meds can make them go off their food for a bit, so don't freak out if she loses her appetite for a day or 2, as long as it comes back...

They recommend not eating the eggs as some residual antibiotics can be passed into them... and we're not supposed to take antibiotics if we don't need them... and small amounts taken needlessly *could* cause us to build up an immunity to them and then when we do need them, they won't work...

What antibiotic did she give you?

Giving the pill like the tech showed you is best, if you can do it... just be firm and don't give up... *and she isn't porcelain, she won't break easy, lol*

Glad she is doing well, thanks for the update...
