Off-topic= @Ravynscroft ... where did you come by Peg? Looking at Metzer I didn’t see an option of calls. I have just absolutely fallen in love with her (the welshie look silver/snowy.. doesn’t change a thing to me I just swoon) and my daughter and I have just the biggest crush on calls because they’re so stinking small and cute. So... I was thinking of maybe doing duck math and sneaking 1 or 2 into my order of Cayugas... or at least that’s what I’ll tell hubs. “Oh! Look! They gave me some freebies!”

I breed and raise Calls myself, many varieties, lots of colors... :) Peg was in an incubator that had bad temp fluxes, thus her handicap at hatch...

Metzers does not offer Calls, and any reputable breeder/hatchery doesn't... they *do not* ship well as ducklings... only 1 or 2 offer Call ducklings and many times the receiver ends up with little to none surviving the shipping stress...

Awwww that’s terrible. So it’s a stress thing that makes them not-shipping friendly? Is it because of their even smaller stature or are they more anxious as a breed? And while YOU didn’t say anything of the sorts, I’m going to understand it that basically any breeder that says they’ll sell and ship calls is probably not the best choice.

I was just reading that they do fly so then I had to google the whole wing clipping procedure. My whole life I thought sing clipping included the bone. Now knowing better, I’m wayyyyy okay with it. Then, because my search engine had call ducks, I had to watch a bunch of videos with call ducks being noisy LOL. Then when I hit “back”, I was back on my search query for plants that are poisonous to ducks (still figuring that one out).

So I would say Peg has given me a world tour of the internet. I’m a sucker for a gimp. My mother has MS so she’s in a wheelchair. My husband sustained injuries due to an IED in Afghanistan so he has a limp. I limp sometimes because at 32, I’m already falling apart LOL.

I’m gonna join the Peg fan club. I’m certain she has one.

And I’ll also be interested in buying some (maybe just 2 ;) ) babies from you when they hatch. Obviously I’ll come get em’... no baby stressing in shipment.

I have no idea when ducklings are actually common. According to my wait for Welsh and Cayugas... I’m assuming March to April is the norm?

Since you joined the Peg fan club, I will shamelessly admit she got her pic chosen for this years Other Poultry calendar, lol... she is Miss December and shows on the cover... :D

As for shipping Calls, it's just ducklings that shouldn't be shipped... started juvies or adults can be and do fine... their smallness at hatch just makes them prone to injury and easily succumbing to stress...

Yes, wing clipping is just the primary flight feathers, sometimes a necessary thing, but feathers grow back when they molt... *pinioning* is where they remove the tip of the wing at the furthest joint, and not something I would do or recommend...

Another thing, Calls are super small, so they'll need protection from predators, they're snack size after all... a duck house to lock them up at night is a must, a covered run as well is even better... they imprint super easy, so flying away wouldn't be a factor growing up there, but they do love to fly around...

They're very social and can be trained too... mine come in at a whistle, and they go into their pen at dusk on their own (unless it's raining or overcast, then their brains fall out, I swear)...

Hatching can be from next month through the summer and sometimes fall... even had a winter of them laying before too, but usually they are seasonal layers, spring-summer...

Sweet mother of goddesses!

I needed more so I totally creeped your page. Peg loves her fuzzy pt. 1 & 2... is she taking the tip of her adorable beak and rubbing it on the blanket!? And then her little head down on the blanket, I’ve never seen a duck lay like that.

She REALLY loves the fuzzy! (And your pied call that you showed was pretty!)

Now, I gotta ask, what was fired to get call ducks to come home?! (LOL)

ETA: Peg in the bathtub!? I want to go hug my ducks now. They won’t let me.

I need a duck to hug. Someone lend me a people loving duck! I... might... return it when done ;)

I absolutely, ex post facto, support the decision of ducky of the month for that!! <3

:gig

Glad you enjoyed all that! :D

Yes, Peg was rubbing the tip of her bill on her fuzzy blanket... and she lays with her head stretched out on it a lot, she likes to rub her chin back and forth too, lol...

If you tell her to 'snuggle the fuzzy' she snuggles it... the fuzzy addiction is strong in this one...

That pied is Wickett, she was the very first grey pied I ever hatched, awesome mama too...

The shot came from our bolt action .22 Remington rifle... they know it takes out predators when necessary so they head for safety if they hear it...

Most of mine will hug when you pick them up... Peg and Brooke (one of her sisters) actively seek out hugs and cuddles though... :)
