We have 3 roosters right now so if any of our new chicks turn out to be roos, we can't keep them unfortunately, we just cant sustain any more roosters at the moment! If one (hopefully not more or any!) are roos we are going to try to sell them at this years fair and if that dosen't work there is a guy that takes anyone's chickens they can't keep roos and/or hens. I would look around to see, in advance, if anyone is open to taking your roos, just in case. Also, anyone who has other opinions on this please speak up, I would try and get darker ones just because they seem to be the most consistent of being girls.
She's Frigg*in beautiful! LOLThis is the best picture I can find of my Bluebell girl Frigg but she looks spot on to the sapphire gem photo. also if they are the same breed they might lay more then the 260 a year I know mine has laid almost every day since I got her last May.
I concur...when in doubt, the darker the better and if there is a dark wash on the beaks legs, even better still!Getting the darker ones might be a good idea basing on you guys few weeks experience ahead of me since I have to get a min of 6 anyways. My last spring first year hatched of 20 assorted heritage chicks (@$20/egg) yielded four roos that I was able to give away since their high quality breeds except 1 that flew under the radar that might go to freezer camp in a month or so after a successful hatch.
Since these are a new breed (possibly..the whole suspicious Bluebell thing..) They're at least new in the U.S so you should be able to give them to good homes if some do end up being boys.Getting the darker ones might be a good idea basing on you guys few weeks experience ahead of me since I have to get a min of 6 anyways.
