I think all of them are important for a well-mannered dog. I feel like another good one is teaching them to not jump on people/counter surf (so like “off”). Obviously potty training is important too 😂

I definitely have some things I still need to work on with my dog, but she’s also a service dog in training so I’m working on a lot of socialization and specialized tasks (alerting, deep pressure therapy, etc.) and being able to have an on/off switch, and switching between working and being a pup.
We trained a young Staffie to watch the security monitors and sound alerts when he saw anyone on camera .He became a service dog later and worked with my sister at a youth center for troubled teens in WV

This is just for curiosity sake and discussion. What do YOU consider basic obedience for a dog!? As in, what commands are essential for them to know. And what commands are basic obedience versus tricks!?

To me, basic obedience includes sit, stay, down, come, and heel and/or loose leash walking.

Those are ESSENTIAL for any dog in my opinion. But ESPECIALLY stay and COME. and SIT. If nothing else, I would teach those three. But preferably all five.

OH!!!!

And a good LEAVE IT! And DROP IT!!!!

Those are vital, essential, and lifesaving commands as well.

So seven.

What commands do YOU consider essential!?!?!?!

Feel free to chime in here or even disagree (politely and respectfully of course!!!!)!!!!!!

And vote in the poll!!!!!
Definitely all of the above!
And tricks are fun, I've taught my dog a lot, but I don't care if she can play dead, spin, or close a cupboard door if I can't recall her off wildlife, keep her from eating something poisonous, take her with me to different places, Etc
