What is happening with chick deliveries?

I ordered my first order of 25 from McMurray the first part of February and got them on March 7th, it was hard to get everything that I wanted ordering that early, I put an order in on March 8th from another Hatchery, Welp Hatchery and ordered 25 more chicks and I can't get them until April 13, I also ordered broilers, usually they are easy to get, but I have to wait until April 13th before they are shipped. It is crazy:he

The Big farm supply place is selling out their shipments of 200 plus chicks within 24hrs of their arrival. The one guy I talked to there said he was practicially selling them as fast as he opened the delivery boxes. He tried to call and double his order with the hatchery and they said not until late July for more chicks.

The smaller mom and pop feed store near home hasn't got theirs in yet, but they ordered in January and doubled the qty from last year. they were selling every chick even unsexed straight runs within a day or two of arrival last year.

Chickens are hot and fashionable. I guess we're all ahead of the fashion curve withthe ladies we aready have.

Except for TSC the rest of our local feed stores have chicks. One has chicks year round, and the other from march till june.

Went in thurs to get chicken feed and they had just gotten a box of St run layers, bantys, ducks and geese. went in today and all thats left are the geese and ducks. They said the bantys sold out in a few hours and the reg chicks 2 days later.

Definatly a run on chicks

You know, I'm wonder if this will affect the price of chicken at the grocery store?? Or maybe even eggs? Could there be a connection between these egg companies and the places that grow chicks for meat or for eggs? Ya'll probably know more about all of that than I do.

I ordered my chicks from McMurray the end of November (may have been first week of December...)with a February deliver date. Everything came as ordered plus three. Thanks to my post office I got them even on a holiday. I think I beat the crowd.

Do we have a Homesteading thread?

BTW :oops:My postman has made sure every day this week that he has my correct phone number since they are "expected pretty early"....this sounds like trouble:old

I had called a couple of other hatcheries and they were limited quantities in FEBRUARY. My feed and seed had troubles getting chicks from Sept-Dec 08, too, despite pre-paid orders from customers and everything.

Sounds more like a disease problem AND a chicken order run, too.

Or maybe I just can't make up my mind.
