Okay, I am more concerned with the hatch. It is safe to put the eggs on their side for hatching, even if they have saddle air cells? Some of the eggs have rolling air cells and the embryos are still developing. So I letting the automatic turn them 3 times a day, to limit the movement for the air cells. I am on day 6, when should I just let the turner do its thing and not unplug it, to limit the movement.
Thanks!
Welcome! I got rid of the clears/quitters when I went into lockdown. I did sniff them after day 14 to make sure they weren't bad. The first time I candled it was hard enough to know what I was looking at and that was with light colored eggs! I don't have experience with greens/blues and really dark ones. But the most important thing is to candle from the fat end right into the air cell. Once you see the outline of the air cell look for red veining. Make sure you are in a very dark room, that really helps. Also since you didn't have any luck last time, I'm wondering what your humidity is at days 1-18??Hello from Oklahoma. I just finished reading this entire forum. Thanks for all of the posts with advice. I am getting ready to lock down my second batch of Ameraucanas. The first batch was 0/8 and I am about to pull my hair out! I wish I had found you guys earlier. I didn't know anything! I have some questions for the green and blue egg people: How is your luck with candling? I can't see anything in half the eggs (and don't know what I am seeing in the others!). Unsuccessful candling has been frustrating.
Having better knowledge about candling, I am wondering when unviable eggs should be thrown out.
Congrats on your new fuzzy butts!! And Welcome!!!
I have early hatchers this batch too..earliest came on day 19, about 12 hours after I moved them to the hatcher. I do dry incubation and then try to just let the humidity go as high as it will during lockdown..well apparently my RH in this area is still too high..chick 1 arrived textbook..chick 2 had some gunk stuck to it..noticed a pip that looked awful wet, so took out my sponge ans guess I'm going to keep my hatcher around 40/50% from here on out..I was worried about it being too low bc of doing the dry incu but guess I should have stuck with what worked before.. So far, everyone is pipped but 1 little banty egg.
