In my previous thread, some very helpful members told me that I needed to get some metronidazole from my vet for my hen with canker. When I went to the vet he handed me a 10g sachet of sulfaclozine sodium monohydrate, which he said is the same as metronidazole, and medicates 30 liters of water. After I got home I mixed ~0.7g into 2 liters of water. I've syringe fed my hen 10ml of it already, but I have no idea how much she needs to drink of this stuff and how often. Any help would be appriciated. The packaging says It treats coccidiosis, but I'm not entirely sure what that is.

Hi there!
Did your vet run a fecal test on your chicken's poop and determine that she does have coccidiosis?

The vet didn't run any test of any kind. Just handed me a packet. I wonder if this stuff will even work. Getting worried.

Aren't coccidiosis and canker both protozoan infections, in which case this medicine should work for the canker but I'm not sure about dosage. Generally it is as much as the bird would normally drink in a day as they self medicate on the treated water. If she will not eat or drink of her own accord you need to work out how much a hen of her size and condition would drink daily. How old is the bird? Large fowl or bantam? Is she currently laying eggs?.... I would guess probably not since she is ill. A laying hen will drink significantly more than a non laying hen. I would go for about 100 mls daily if she is a full grown large fowl bird, maybe half that if she is a bantam, split into several smaller doses throughout the day if possible.
If she is drinking on her own let her self medicate.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I am way out on that advice.

Your vet gave you medicine without giving a dosage amount? That is weird to me.

I would continue to mix a fresh batch daily like you have done and hope she drinks enough. Can you mark the water level on your waterer to see about how much water she is drinking each day...also you may want to use some of this treated water to mix into a small amount of feed to make a mash.

She's not really able to drink or eat by herself and I've been feeding her with a syringe. She's about 5 years old and is a large fowl. I think she was laying eggs, but I'm not sure if she's laying now.
