what is the proper etiquette for garage sales..dogs acceptable or not?

In my mind, when someone has a garage sale, and there is someone walking a dog down the street, and the person sees something they may like to buy... What is the issue???? All these pages about do or dont bring a dog. Do you all really think people are PURPOSELY going to garage sales with their dog??? I mean honestly - how many people are there out there that are going to purposely bring their MEAN and vicious dog to a garage sale? Channeling John Stossel - give me a break.

I posted earlier, but after reading other posts and really thinking about it, I think I'm definitely against the idea. It's like walking into a mall with a dog on a leash and letting it sniff around and possibly pee, as you said does happen. Bottom line is you are on someone else's property and for the purpose of conducting business, and I just think it's inappropriate to tote along a dog. Others might have fears, allergies, the owner might be worried about the dog flipping over things, it's just no more appropriate than bringing one into a shop in my opinion. Surely you have other places to bring your dog, parks, dog beaches, etc. Bringing a dog onto someone else's property and roaming around with it and letting it pee on their lawn really isn't okay with most people.

As an antique dealer for over 10 years now; we hit hundreds of sales every month...it is rude to think other people will not mind your dog. It isn't just about the person giving the sale, but everyone else around who now has to watch out for the dog, as well as not knowing what type of temperament the dog has.

This also goes for dogs and children at estate sales. Neither one is welcome.

Thinking you can ask the owner is ok, is NOT fair to the owner..you are putting that person in an uncomfortable position. They are doing this to sell things..they can not speak for everyone else at the sale..when honestly, these types of places are not meant for pets! And if people do not think that people do not purposely bring their dogs to sales, they have no idea how large the garage sale culture is.

I have seen people bring their dogs to antique fairs and watched these tiny dogs pee on every table leg they pass by...the owner is completely oblivious to it. I watched one time as the owner told the dog owner about the pee and the woman ranted on and on about how good her dog was and would never do that. I have seen people bring large dogs who wag their tails and knock things off tables or taken a dump right in the walkways. I have seen dogs get into fights with other dogs.

I have seen people walk around with strollers with their pets inside taking up floor space from buyers who are trying to get around tables, only to not be able to get in due to the dog in a buggy.

I have seen children break things at garage sales, estate sales, antique fairs..and the parents just make excuses...

A dog is not human, a dog is an animal with animal instincts. If you want to take your dog out, go to a dog park. If you want to take your kids out, go to a child friendly environment.

It does not matter how much you love your dog...or your child.....this isn't about you. You are in a public place around other people...we constantly complain that if people thought about others first the world would be different..well, here you go.

I am wondering if anyone here has even CONSIDERED a service dog, because they pee too!!! They poo, the pee, on their own bodies demand.

I just find this conversation ridiculous. You have a dog with you when you see something you like and you buy it. Yes some people are irresponsible with their dogs, however, I doubt they frequent garage sales.

I havent seen to many blind folks browsing yard sales myself, but in public, one tends to overlook things that arise due to service animals in the PUBLIC domain. The discussion relating to yard sales and such are usually on PRIVATE property.

I watched a Rottie run all over at an auction last night. The daughter of the estate was frantically trying to find the owner. She did run him down and he exclaimed "Oh he is a big pussy cat". The auctioneer was too busy talking with people whom had their furniture "marked" by this big pussy cat.

My wife and I stood guard over our items and were not going to let that dog mark our purchases...very very rude and without regard to everyone in attendence, which was well over 150 people.

Did they have the auction owners permission to let their dog on the property? If not, then the dog should NOT have been there....

Reading all this, I have come to conclusion that I am a simple person, period. I have a garage sale and you are walking your dog, come on in. Period. I said period twice. Bad grammar me.

From the conversation we overheard...no. The lady had her personal dog with her which never left her arms and she stayed in a side yard while the auction was ongoing. It wasnt until the rottie made an appearence that she and others had to deal with the issue.

I love dogs...just hate bad dog owners. Bad kids and bad pets are the result of bad owners period.
