I think if left long enough (and I don’t mean in a good way) this yellow area will eventually become another blackened area. Right now there is still the thinnest layer of compromised skin covering it and keeping it from oxidizing.
The more I come back to thinking about it, the more I think it needs to be opened and cleaned out. The body can fight infection yes, and the soaking is helping locally, yes, but it’s not really capable of resorbing the sheer mass of puss in there.

Just mho while vacuuming and mulling this case over in my mind....

*so much dog hair gives me a lot of time to think....

You are probably right with the thought it needs to be opened up. We won’t be able to do anything today other than soak and medicate, due to schedules, etc. however, tomorrow looks like a possibility as I’ll have another adult helper (who is not squeamish) in the morning, rather than just the tween helper. Tween might be squeamish at sight of chicken puss and blood, or might lose hold of the rooster, who is large. My imagination can conjure up all kinds of scenarios there, but they all include a bathroom that would need a deep clean...followed by humans needing showers...

I'm curious as to what this thing is, exactly. An abscess or breast blister that burst, then got infected, then hardened off somehow? I processed a huge cockerel this fall that had a fluid filled breast blister that was the same size and location as this, absent any sign of redness or hardness.

I'm morbidly eager to see what the inside of this thing looks like when it's cleaned out. I'm glad your boy is such a good sport about being handled and treated.
