What is this Scabby & Enlarged Thing on Roo's Chest?

Pics
You are probably right with the thought it needs to be opened up. We won’t be able to do anything today other than soak and medicate, due to schedules, etc. however, tomorrow looks like a possibility as I’ll have another adult helper (who is not squeamish) in the morning, rather than just the tween helper. Tween might be squeamish at sight of chicken puss and blood, or might lose hold of the rooster, who is large. My imagination can conjure up all kinds of scenarios there, but they all include a bathroom that would need a deep clean...followed by humans needing showers...
You might want another helper to take photos to share with us!!!
We are crazy that way.....:yesss:
Good luck! You’ve got this! :highfive:

Here is Day 4 update: 20 min soak in Epsom salt bath. He was more opinionated today when we took him out of the bath and wrapped him in a towel to take to the bathroom. His soaks are in the utility sink in the laundry room. While wriggling on the way to get his blow-dry, the scab came off! No Blood! No pain! I rinsed with sterile saline, then applied betadine. Once dried off, we applied the antibiotic ointment (generic neosporin).

Since the scab came off tween insisted he get a gauze pad and then vet wrap. I made tween promise to put him right on the roost and to take off the vet wrap first thing in the morning.

Here are todays pics (note the spot where the scab came off). The yellow patches are still there. The drips are just from the sterile saline.

Here he is wrapped up for the night with vet wrap. We applied it snuggly, but not tight. It is only wrapped 2x, so it would fully cover the gauze pad. He can still breath fine, and this is below his crop, so no interference.

I would do another soak and get the rest of that gunk out of there. It may require a scalpel and tweezers and extra willing hands.
Something is going on to cause his body to produce puss. There may even be a splinter or something stuck inside.

A side note: As long as he tolerates it and doesn't get snagged in anything he's fine wrapped up in vet wrap. I had a hen out with the flock bandaged up for a month or two without problems.

:highfive:Well...I think that’s awesome outcome. The other pus pockets might do the same thing but in a smaller scale.
The tissue in the hole looks pretty pink and nice~a bit of good news! I’d keep it packed too at least until you check it tomorrow. See how it reacts. Perhaps a slow pouring of diluted betadine let it dry a bit and photo’s tomorrow.
Your doing a great job! You know he feels better. Can’t wait for the next update!

I will add that I'm a big believer in honey as a treatment. You'd have to keep him wrapped up for that but its antibacterial and antimicrobial. Promotes tissue granulation and healing.
I honestly like bee propolis even better. Its antibacterial, antimicrobial, and studies show promise with some antiviral properties.
I'm partial to Extreme Care.

It has Blue German Chamomile (studies show reduces pain) two types of Helichrysum (antibiotic and antimicrobial properties) and propolis in. I am a little bias as I know the makers.

Another option is Green Goo

More expensive and doesn't contain the same ingredients. (but was as close as I found)
