What is this wierd thing sticking out her chest!?

Oh, dear. We're all just waiting for these pictures. I feel like going over, getting the phone, and trying to email them myself!! Don't worry...we can wait. We just have to learn that this is real life & not a chicken version of ER or something!

. . . Glad she's doing better. I agree, too much peroxide isn't good. I've always been told to use Betadine on animal wounds.

There's an avian vet in San Diego that will work on your chicken but it isn't cheap!! My mom had an old rooster that she thought would be okay to introduce to a young roo. You
guessed it, the old guy was practically beat to death. My mom spent....are you ready?.... $1,600 to try to save the rooster and he died.

One has be be practical when deciding the best fate for an animal. You're doing the best thing for your hen. She's lucky to have such a chicken loving Mama!

Congrats on being brave and doing this.
I had a hen who got a small wound on her bottom several years ago. Then she got a big lump around the area, and I didn't realize then that it was an abscess. She probably would have lived, had I known and had I excised it. But now I know and will be able to do something like that in the future if I need to.
This forum is great for teaching!

i had to operate on my hen yesterday bad place on her foot ,but the sore started on top between the first two toes,i cleaned it then soaked it,it had the hard scab just wasn't on the bottom, had everything ready i thought then realized i forgot to buy vetwrap had no gauze ,so i went old school, tore up an old white pillow slip anyway i took off the scab and you talk about smell i should have taken that bet,it was so bad i had to stop twice and go outside, then come back in to work some more but my hen did great,i dug it out there was a lot of hard yellow gunk in it i wrensed it a lot with peroxide then saline filled it with neosporin and wrapped it she seems better shes walking on it today-without much limping got my information from you guys directions thank-you janie jnkir7 i didnt think it was suppose to smell bad

Chickiebooboo,

If you did not dig out all of the infection, it won't heal. You have to get all the yellow cheesey stuff out of her.

You may throw up a bit in your mouth, but she will thank you in the long run......

We got as much out as we could without hurting her more. Here are some pics, they REALLY suck. But they are better then nothing

Squeezing the infection out, we really didnt need to squeeze very much. After we got going it flowed pretty good! It smelt REALLY bad too, the wind was blowing it away from me, and I still smelt it
