I had a cat with an abscess that I dealt with the same way. I went a step further and irrigated the hole that was left with normal saline for the first couple days after the initial surgery. Stuff continued to be flushed out of the hole until about Day 4. Something to consider. I never used antibiotics on the cat and she did really well. No infection after lancing the abscess.

Glad to hear it went well. I can't wait to see the pics. I was a nurse until I had my daughter, so I love medical mysteries and OR pics.

Wow, what a thread! Now I too am waiting to see these pics. Like the rest of you, I am not really sure why I want to see the pus pics? All I do know, is I am now sucked into this; I have read this thread form beginning to end, and I am in need of some sort of closure. Great Information!

ITA! Hydrogen peroxide is OK to use at first, but it actually prevents healing. You can find recipes for making "normal" saline online. This helps to make an environment that is not bacteria friendly, without preventing healing.

If you do wind up with infection, you can make a very weak bleach solution to rinse with. My mom is a nurse who specializes in wound care. She always helps me with my animals.

I agree. You might need to open it back up to let it drain again. It may fill back up. Waiting for pus pics!!!!!

I was told once whenever you attempt this kind of surgery that you should make a vertical incision to allow the pus or fluids to drain out. A horizontal incision will not drain as well. A pocket or cup would form instead that would keep the pus inside.

We tried to keep the hole as open as possible without leaving unprotected from becomeing infected again. I am checking it every chance I get and so far so good!
