What is this wierd thing sticking out her chest!?

It's an abcess from a wound. It will not drain so no need to try. When a chicken gets an infection, it abcesses and turns into a hard, rubbery "gunk" that looks like boiled egg yolk or cheddar cheese. It must be DUG out.

Soak her in warm salt water and yes, you can use regular salt, till it softens. I also wash with Betadine water. Then use a sharp single-edge razor and make a deep incision right down the middle. You will be able to see the gunk and dig it out. Then fill the wound with regular Neosporin (not the pain relief kind) and she should be fine.

Normally I would suggest removing the entire scab but it's so big I think you'll be fine with making a deep incision right down the middle. There will be a lot of gunk in that size wound. Clean it out till you see good, pink, healthy tissue and there's no swelling left - just skin that should fall flat against her chest once you've cleaned it out.

Though it looks to be size of a baseball, you don't have to make a very long incision, just a deep one. You can dig everything out from about a one inch long incision. Of course, if you are up for it, you can make a longer incision and then close it up with a stitch or two and yes, you can use regular needle and thread.

Wish I hadn't but I've operated on so many of these type of wounds it's ridiculous.

Don't forget to cover her head loosely with a towel so she can't see and get scared. If you swaddle her in another blanket so she's secure and secured, that will keep her from flapping all over; just expose the abcess so you can work on it.
Do it indoors, on newspapers and in really good light. Have everything you need handy. You may also want a fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide to clean out the abcess after you've dug the gunk out and before packing it with neosporin.

WOW... You guys/gals are amazing.... who would have thought, so happy I came across this site.. It just might save me and my hens..

Thanks so much for adding that information. I answer these type of questions so often I forget to put all the details.

Yes, I've found I can do crop surgery and just about anything to them if I cover them up, especially their head and lay them on their side till they are calm and quiet. After that, I never even have to hold them. I too use Hydrogen Peroxide to initally flush out a wound (after I've dug all the gunk out) and then I apply the Neosporin.

I'm going to do this tomorrow, it looks like quite a big job... I'll pick up what I need on my lunch break and get this over with. I didnt know it was going to be such a big job! I've never done a chicken surgery before... I guess theres a first time for everything though!
