WHAT IS THIS?!

Yup! It's kind of a lost practice but it is still done. A neutered cockerel is called a capon. They tend to be less aggressive, fatter, little to no crowing, and the comb will cease to grow. The testicles are inside the bird. It can be done with or without anaethesia. I THINK this is a capon.

Hmm i'll have to call the vet and see if they can do that to blades! I love him, he's my sweetest chicken ever. He even snuggles into you if you sit near him but I can't have a rooster

Maybe they have never done it, but will do it for you. With anesthesia of course. A vet near us said he would do it but it's a gamble whether the bird makes it. Your rooster will snuggle even more after the procedure I would predict. All up to you!

Hi all

Are you sure this is a roo? This bird is quite dark and Barred Rock roos are lighter than the hens. The bars are not as 'stripey' as rocks I've seen. I also don't see obvious wattles, as you might expect for a young roo.

I had a barred rock hen that had a larger comb than usual...I kept waiting for her to crow, but despite an enormous, jaunty comb she ended up being a hen for sure. Just to say, don't despair yet!

Now that you bring up the lack of wattle. Maybe it's a girl. I agree, wait for it to let out a half crow.

She's/he's very motherly. We're having a storm right now and it's protecting our 4 week olds under his/her wing. It's precious.

I don't know if anyone has said this before, but I think that bird has a beard. A quite small one, but it's there. That's why it has no wattles. I would bet it's some sort of EE cross. That would explain the weird comb too. I have several EE x Cuckoo marans chicks that look similar. I would put my money on rooster.
