WHAT IS THIS?!

I don't think it has a beard...? But I'm also. Newbie. Today I noticed some small fleshy colored bumps coming under the beak. May be wattle

I'm going to say black sex link cockerel. To have a pure BR that dark is really rare and the barring is messy. Same with marans. Plus with the comb, it's not pure.

Today it seems he's / she's lost it's neck! Haha

Thats a br hen. Feathering will get more barred as she gets older. I've had barreds for 3 yrs and love them. Great broodies and moms and my roos are super sweet to humans and the hens

I have a pure barred rock that is dark. One never seen a dark rock. I got it at tractor supply its colored different from the other two rocks I got with it.
Are you sure you didn't get a black sex link by mistake? Black sex link males will look just like a pure BR chick at hatch.

Here is a pure BR cockerel (6 weeks old):

And a pure BR hen. She was about 16 weeks old in this picture.

You can tell by the comb that this bird is not pure. I still think you have a black sex link cockerel. There is absolutely no way this chick is a pullet with a comb that large and pink.

It has a pea comb. It's a mix. The funky appearence is normal for mix of pea comb with single comb. Possibly EE or EE crossed with barred rock.

it does seem to be showing male-ish characterstics. Show a side shot- to see if it's growing roo type feathers on wings and back yet. It kind of seems there are some darker ones coming out below the chin in those last pictures.

looking at pictures again- I am inclined to agree it has a beard, a small one and it can be smaller and more slicked back on boys. Also beards can be smaller on crosses or mixes. I guess that goes with it being possibly an EE or EE crossed with something barred.

one more thing, pea comb reduces wattle size. So does beard. No wonder the wattles are so tiny on this bird.
