Something I would like to toss in to this discussion: I DO think it is important, and beneficial, to maintain individual dog BREEDS. It would be such a shame to see Golden Retrievers, Heelers, GSDs, beagles, Newfoundlands, Corgis, Yorkies, etc., ETC., gone from our world!! Are they "special"?? In a nutshell, well... yes!! They all have traits both physical & mental that are incredible and very different from one another. It would be sad (to me) to see them all muddled together & lost forever..

As far as crossbreeds & "mutts", my issues with that are: MOST of them are either unplanned or a result of a desire to MAKE MONEY, both scenarios are by no means putting the welfare of the animals first. Or even second or third!! (*THIS IS TRUE OF IRRESPONSIBLE BREEDERS OF "PUREBREDS" AS WELL*!!).

Do crossbreeds deserve the same love, care, respect, etc...? Absolutely. Some of my most beloved pets have been "mutts", rescues, etc. !!! But it truly is more of a "gamble"... Genetics and past history are usually unknown or negative. Which makes for a higher risk of "challenges" both behaviorally and health-wise. A lot can be done with love & training & veterinary medicine, but it is an important consideration.

And in the meantime work toward eliminating irresponsible and/or "profit-driven" breeding of both purebreds AND crossbreds... Spay/neuter pets, adopt an animal in need with your eyes WIDE OPEN, and if you want a purebred, that's fine, but RESEARCH the breeder and go to a responsible one. Badly bred "purebreds" are as much of a genetic gamble as crossbreds/mutts... They just COST more!!!!!!!

My daughters 1st pony was a dead broke shetland pony mare that was also broke to drive. She was 25 yrs old and we paid $1000 for her. You could do ANYTHING with her. She was a saint. I was heartbroke the day we had to put her down.

She has an 8 yr old welsh mare now who isn't quite as a good of a teacher but still is a good fit for her.
To the OP. We had friends get a rescue dog that we a chioodle? Chihuahua/poodle and my dh always called it a cheesedoodle!!!

It's insane what they get for these designer mutts. They are on Kijiji all the time. I think one of the few mixes that I really like though is a jack russel/welsh corgi. They are pretty cute

These statements of Moving and cant take the dog have a legit side to them,
Someone who is forced to move from their homes due to forclosured loss of jobs etc, not fair to lump allsurrendersinto one lump sum
Most Apartments that people are forced to take will NOT allow dogs.

Hey, if I had some designer mutts and someone wanted to pay me an oodle of $ for them...UHmmm.. Yes!! I would do it.

I would think mutts are healthier than pure breds anyways so maybe they are paying for healthier dogs... idk..Im not big on dogs...

Ok, this post is just silly. I hope you aren't being serious. Mutts aren't always healthier then purebred dogs. If there weren't so many backyard breeders or puppy millers, there would be fewer health problems in the purebred dogs. Most byb or p.m. overbreed and breed their lines too close too often causing many, many issues.

It amazes me that people are so selective with their poultry, goats, horses, cows, etc but they don't put that same consideration into their dogs.

Wow, I am still amazed at this thought process.....

some breeds should never be crossed period, just not healthy for the dog, I don't care how *cute* it is. Some breeds weren't meant to have bulging eyes or short snouts......

Well I am amazed at how people don't understand a persons post and then quote it being rude and calling my thought process silly.

I'm really amazed at how people don't think before speaking/typing.

If you read correctly you will see that I said I am not a big dog person ~ IDK (I don't know) ~ I said I WOULD THINK..didn't say I KNEW this. I was just stating that I thought they would be healthier since all I have ever read is breeding purebred things causes more genetic problems than mutt breeding....so try to understand things before you post please. I was just giving an opinion...not fact...I don't breed dogs. If I did want to, I do have every right to breed anything I like..as do you

And there is a small grain of truth in your statement. Inbreeding in some dogs and breeding for bigger and bigger sized dogs has caused some problems that are now genetic defects in these dogs. The cancer rate in Danes is now a noticeable problem, we all know about the early arthritis that the really big breeds get and some of the smaller dogs with their tendency for neurological problems like epilepsy, deafness, etc....So in theory, let's say a Great Dane bred to a smaller greyhound or shepherd might live a longer and more productive life than say, my 200 pound Dane who at the age of 6 is already moving slowly because of arthritis.
