***Edit: discovered it is green muscle disease. ***

Processing our meat birds today. Going along nicely and then I cut into this one. What the heck is wrong with this bird? The b breast meat is the only place I saw it. The leg & thigh meat seemed normal. Nothing smells bad.

Out of caution, I discarded all of it and disinfected my equipment prior to moving to the next bird. Has anyone seen this before?

It's dead tissue. Necrotic and stating to rot due to lack of blood flow and oxygen. Best to not consume. It would never pass usda inspected for reference.

actually once in a blue moon it is found in whole chickens at the store. Not supposed to be but... Most home processors cut it out and eat the rest of the bird

I've found it, cut it out, ate the rest of the bird. Rest of the bird was fine, and had healthy tissue. Green muscle disease sucks. But the rest of my batch of 23 CX didn't have it, so there's that.

Sorry if I was unclear. I've cut it out before as well, but I thought the op was taking about taking it out of the trash and saving the affected muscle for the dogs. It's very hard to detect if it's only a small patch so I can see how it would get past inspection in less severe cases, but it's not a passable bird if it's visible. The muscle is dead so proceed with caution. No problem using the legs, thighs, and wings still.
