I ordered some chicks from a hatchery back in November and when they came they had been debeaked. I freaked. I was horrified that anyone would do that to a chicken. I guess I had just not ever thought that "debeaking" would be necessary for a chicken. Well, I called the company and she said, "Sorry, We'll send you more." I couldn't deal with anymore, and I couldn't send those back, so I am stuck with 25 "debeaked" layers. They look awful and I feel really sorry for them, but they seem to be happy and well adjusted to their "challenging" lifestyle. What a mess! I don't know how they will cope with the older layers? Whoever came up with such an absurd idea to "debeak" a chicken?

I'm not sure who came up with debeaking but it is a quite common practice among people raising large numbers of meat birds. It prevents pecking and can substantially reduce injuries and losses due to cannabalism. I believe that it would make free range feeding a little more difficult, but eating from a feeder would not be a problem. I agree that it does ruin their looks.
I used to get down in your neck of the woods quite often. My parents lived in Aurora KY and I spent alot of time fishing on Kentucky Lake, often going out of Paris Landing. Real pretty country.
