That is so incredibly sweet❣️ I always thought about adding gentle Polish & Bantam Cochins to our Silkies but the timing was never right to do so & now what we have will be our last birds due to our own advancing age & poor health. We are enjoying this last peaceful flock.
So many great chickens. Sadly not enough time or space.

Sweet babies❣️Polish & Silkies are much gentler breeds than layers/standard bigger breeds. Even w/our gentle mid-size Dominique (who's aging) around our 5 Silkies she can get snippy/annoyed if they get around her treats but not injurious. But generally she leaves them alone.

We've had standard layers in the past & found them generally way too bullying to keep around gentle Silkies. Silkies like Polish are great without the excessive b*tchy moods of layer breeds. I only found the White Leghorn layer sweet around Silkies ~ the Buff Leghorn (had BO cross) was aggressive & it started to disrupt the peaceful flock to the point that we rehomed the bigger layer breeds to our neighbor's flock who was more than delighted for the eggs.

DH says our egg skelter is filled w/ Silkie eggs again & he needs to make another quiche! & we only have 4 out of 5 Silkies laying right now! These girls lay thruout the 4-season year & have the biggest bantam egg size that's the same size as our mid-size standard Dominique eggs!
I get a little miffed myself when someone tries to take my treats!
(Just saying)

Under the Deck

If you remember, Nimue loved it under the deck. So I finally closed it off from chicken access as I did not want a nest of eggs under there.

Well little Joy found a way in. I had to disassemble portions of the deck to get her back out. That was work I had not planned on today.

Little troublemaker.

“Block us off? I’ll show him!!”!:gig

I thought he is a Speckled Sussex? He won't just be brown. They are pretty spectacular roos! From Meyer's:

Yes I believe he is a Speckled Sussex. He has a green tail coming in and he has lots of white spots.
I do love spots!

Yesterday I was so bummed about our friend's passing I totally forgot it was my birthday! But sweet DH didn't forget & got me surprise ~ soft Chinese food & Chinese sweet desert (my dental surgery work last Monday).

Again... my last birthday party I was 21... so that makes me 22 for this year too?

Happy birthday. 22 is a great age.

You GO girl! 💕 The smaller gentler breeds are busier/smarter than we give them credit! I LOVE the gentler breeds... just as clever & forage-savvy, if not more so, than layer breeds without the unpredictable temperament of bigger breeds. For bigger breeds our best have been White Leghorn, BBS Blue Breda, Blue Wheaten Ameraucana & Dominiques. Never had a Barred Rock but owners say they are fairly mellow for a layer breed.

Our favorite breeds so far:

But, of course, we've dealt only w/ hens & no roo's.

Where does this correlation between smaller and gentler come from?
I see no evidence Cookie will be gentle. She goes around chest bumping Mr. Chips even though she has to really leap up to get to his height!
