What kind of dog do you have?

We lost our lab to lung cancer in the spring. We had been thinking about getting a puppy, but we hadn't decided on anything yet. A couple of months before we had to put her down, we were blessed with a couple of abandoned puppies. They were in bad shape at first, but are absolutely beautiful now. The best we can tell, they are lab/shepherd mix. Awesome dogs!!! Smart and loyal and very, very funny. They're only a year old, so they still do a lot of puppy things.

We also have 2 little terrier mutts that we got from the pound about 8 years ago. Great dogs. Definitely live up to their terrier reputations!!! We don't have a squirrel or other rodent within several hundred yards of our house!!!!

German Shorthaired Pointer. She's the love of my life (sorry, DH! :-D)

She's excellent with the chickens now! She loves to sort of follow them around and watch them, so its been a great help.

I have four dogs, but I love my Great Pyrenees for the work she does guarding the chickens. Please note, that breed is not the only thing that determines if a dog will be good with the birds. Temperament is also very important. To stack the odds in your favor you might choose an LGD breed (I prefer the Pyrs), choose a breeder that breeds for LGDs not show dogs and then pick the calmest of the puppies.

As we have discussed elsewhere on the forum, you will need to train the puppy (or dog) to tolerate the chickens until she matures. Pyrs take from 1.5 to 2 years to fully mature. After that, you should have a dependable LGD.
