What life a chicken get?

Typical production chicken - around 2 yrs for egg layers, less than 10 weeks for meat chickens.

Backyard chickens - routinely live to 5-8 yrs, and much older in many cases. Even geriatric hens will occasionally lay an egg here and there also, even!

Imran, could you post some pictures of your chickens? I would imagine that you have some different breeds and varieties in Pakistan. It would be nice to see!

I have a hen and a roo that are about 8-9 years old, and they are going strong. The old gal has started laying pretty good again recently. After very few eggs last summer and no eggs at all last fall and winter I am suddenly getting 1-2 eggs every 3 days from her. Of course, about every 5th egg has no shell!! And before anybody says anything, she has plenty of good food and free choice oyster shell.
