Oh, definitely. I don't intend to keep them together past the 12 week mark. I've just not decided if I'm getting them all buddies from a different family or if they are going to be on their own...If I'm not going to actually breed them, I may take them up to the vet and have them neutered/spayed just to keep things simpler. But - really - I'd kinda like having them around as entertainment and food. My husband grouses at me every time I mention eating one of them at the 12 week mark...but, he knows that all my animals are destined for Camp Kenmore (to quote Yinepu) at some point ... well, except the cats and dogs and that's cuz Americans get kinda weird about that sort of thing

But, seriously - since these guys aren't purebred (thank you all for pointing that out) I'm not quite sure what to go with to breed with them. I wouldn't want to have larger rabbits - we just don't eat that much, it's why we go with smaller birds in our flock, too, btw. But, I don't want to be buying show quality stuff, either, since I'm not showing.

So - suggestions? Maybe getting some 'real' mini rexes to mix with them? Maybe mini satins? Where would you suggest going to purchase the smaller rabbits? I see the big ones for sale everywhere; but, I'm not overly conversant with the rabbit world, yet

Check craigslist - ebayclassifieds - hmmm facebook may have some rabbitries near you. With wanting to possibly use them as meat rabbits - the mini rexes are a suitable size that should be around your buns & will also make their fur much softer...Giving you another use for them -other than entertainment & a delish meal-> you could tan their hides & have some nice furs to make things with. Major thing to remember is NEVER have a breeding pair where the doe is a lot smaller than the buck - a little bit smaller I found works just fine still but things can get ugly if you have a giant buck on a lil doe (I am catching up on this thread so sorry if this has already been answered & done w/)

Do NOT rebreed her! your doe can develop 2 litters a week apart and end up killing all the babies and herself! The common rule is do it that day of and if you are risky the day after but no longer. A doe will still acept a male even if she is prego.
You're right I remember being told of that years ago. So I'll just stick with the breeding on Saturday and see what happens. Hopefully it took.

I'm always surprised by what takes. I had one very reluctant doe, I put her in with the buck and she barley lifted for him. I tried to re breed her that day and she was having none of it, running around the cage, trying to get away from him. I thought for sure that it wouldn't take so I bred another doe that day. Sure enough, 31 days later, the reluctant doe kindles and has 4 kits, the back up doe has none.

Would you all wait till 6 months before breeding a Lionhead (dwarf) rabbit?

This is one of our newest additions. Is a Californian/ Mini Holland Lop cross... is a month old.

And this is called a HAPPY MEAL... She's a great mom who still takes good care of her kits and two adopted kits

Um, Happy Camper? Please excuse me for being so rude as to point this out, but there is a Mini Lop, and a Holland Lop, but there is no Mini Holland Lop.

Your bunny is a cutie, whatever you call it!

Hahaha... that is by no means rude. Thanks for the clarification. I have all meat rabbits and only have one Holland Lop and two Netherland Dwarfs that I got as pets to get acquainted with the bunny world before I got my Californians and started breeding them.

They are my elders (but still young, less than 3 yrs old). The Dwarfs won't breed with the HL and I just thought I'd like to have her offspring before she got to an age where kindling would be dangerous. That was the purpose of this excercise.

I called her Mini Holland Lop (this sounds funny now), cause that's what I read once and that stuck w/ me. This is what I read in a quick way that got me confused

"The Miniature Lop, is often called the Mini Lop in the UK, however, it is a different breed from US Mini Lop. The Miniature Lop is the equivalent of the US Holland Lops, however it can be smaller than the US Holland Lops."

So what is she? I guess a Holland Lop, right?

According to the American Rabbit Breeders Association standards, the Mini Lop is to weigh between 4 1/2 and 6 1/2 pounds, and the Holland has an adult weight of no more than 4 pounds. However, the Holland is a breed that employs the dwarfing gene to get the tiny, compact animal described in the breed standard, so it is entirely possible to get "false dwarf" Hollands that are well within the weight range of the Mini Lop.

From the picture you posted on another thread, I'd say your girl is a Holland Lop.
