I had a non religious family. My parents taught and raised us based on a mix of the teachings and principals of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and reverence for ancestors (ancestor worship). My mother was a serious student of Theravada Buddhism, though she spent much time at meditation groups/ classes and studying dharma at a Mahayana temple to supplement her own studies. We sometimes went to the temple with my mom, but no one pushed us to believe one way or another. In fact, the monks taught us basic moral principals and basic teachings of Buddha (e.g., life is suffering, have compassion, etc.) and also encouraged us to find our own beliefs, to respect others beliefs, and not just follow our parents' beliefs. (Many people/ cultures practice Buddhism as a religion now, rather than just teachings.) The monks even took us to a synagogue to learn about Judiasm.
I was somewhat agnostic in my early 20s, but became atheist by my mid-20s. I believe in science, have a leaning towards Buddha's basic teachings as a way of life and my friend likes to call me a hippie. I don't believe in organized religion. I do however find religions and peoples' beliefs fascinating.
