What silly things are your chickens scared of???

Ahaha! This thread made me feel so much better. I was just reading about lover hens who hop up in people's lap (my 4 month olds don't do that!! but I didn't raise them from chicks.. only 12wks) and it made me insanely jealous because I think my flock is skittish. Mostly I think their leader is skittish and they're all followers heh.. maybe they will come around eventually? I heard that when they start laying sometimes they look to humans for comfort. I can only hope!! ^.^

My girls are afraid of.. wait for it... The Wind. Yep, wind starts blowing leaves of the tree they're under, everybody RUNFLYRUN!!! Quickly, to the.. OTHER TREE!!

That's hilarious! Come to think of it, mine scatter when the wind blows too...

On the note of lap-birds: while mine certainly are not cuddle-bunnies, I have a few that are starting to warm up to me. I've had mine for 6 weeks, since they were 3 months old. It started with a few of them eating scratch out of my hand. These 4 birds are the only ones that will let me pet them. The smallest hen, Lulu, has started to fly onto my hand or arm, and even my shoulder, to be first in line for any treats I bring.

Of course, if I move a muscle, she scurries away in a hurry...

Where they shipped to you? If so they may not want to go for a plane ride again!

Interesting. I know the three young ones were. But I don't think the older ones were.

Only happens when we have weather in the Bay Area and they reverse the flight pattern into SJC. Then they fly over our house. And sometimes, quite low. Or maybe it's the particular equipment those guys fly. But the hens look up and sound the alarm. I stand out there and tell them FedEx is not going to get them and to carry on and they go back to scratching and doing their thing. But they really give it a good one eye when they bank over the yard.

My husband think the reason the chicks are afraid of tape measures is they think its a snake.
Our chicks dont seem to be afraid of anything although they run when anyone walks by them but only for a minute.

OMG, that explains things. I used to have this long black plastic thing attached to the end of one of my gutters and had one chicken who would NOT cross it. The others just hopped over it like it wasn't even there but this one was deathly terrified of it.

I'll bet she thought it was a snake. That never occurred to me.

I learn something new about my hens EVERY day.

The Rake.

Oh gosh the rake scares the chooks to death. I think it's because it looks like a huge claw going to grab them. But like a broom, it is useful for shooing them into the coop.

For this special occasion I just HAD to make a picture

Mine mostly shy away from the tractor (can't blame them!) and rain. During their first week out in the yard as chicks, it was just barely drizzling, and then suddenly it turned to big chunks of hail. They all ran up to me, peeping and trying to find shelter. It was a very 'the sky is falling!' moment, cracked me up :)
