what sort of goose

Except for the color, it looks just like my american blue! The color could be dirt, or from poor breeding. I still think it is an american blue.
ETA: The blue color can get a bit 'rusty' if the bird is in the sun too long, so maybe that's it?

In some breeds, different sized lobes is a diferrential between the sexes. I don't know if this is true for the americans. I know mine has same-sized lobes. I'd have to do some searching to find out for sure.

ick... most of "lobe" and "goose" searches bring me to eating goose...

it seems that uneven lobes are a fault in most breeds.

edited to add: not that I care... Trumpet is an awesome goose!

This is my first year ever having geese, and both mine are still babies (albeit big babies), so I don't know about the 'losing its mate' thing. But considering it is not interested in other geese, appears to be young to the OP, knows how to behave when 'disciplined', and is greatly attached to the people, I would say someone got it as a pet, kept it inside with no other birds around, then realized that they are not really pet birds. It was probably too loud, or too messy, or too something, which is really pretty sad. I love my geese, I wouldn't trade them for anything. People really need to research things before they jump in head-first!

It looks like it could be a Stienbracher Goose! Does it have black on its bill (like black lip stick?) Good Luck. He or She is Gorgeous.

Bless you for taking him in

he is beautiful.

The uneven lobes is a 'fault' in the poultry show world, but not all of us humans "show well" either

I would search the internet for the "geese as pets" forums . . . there are crazier people than us out there with house geese in diapers. Maybe THEY can help you rehome him/her with a person looking specifically for a human imprinted house goose.

I know Yahoo! has a forum like this, and there must be others.

That poor goose!

It was likely a lone gosling, maybe an easter gift. A lone gosling will imprint or bond to his human. She doesn't know any better. It is possible that the goose was too pesky and even though it was fun to develop the relationship, it got tiring and the goose was dumped. POOR thing. He doens't understand why his humans dumped him and is attaching to you.

Thanks for taking him in.
