What the heck is tankage?

Is that in chicken feed? How unappetizing! I wouldn't want any animal to eat that!

It's used in lots of types of feed to add fat and protien

It's just processed ingredients that they would naturally eat any way.

It's not that much different than what's in hot dogs

OK. That's just nasty.

Sorry. Or Bologna. Offal is in quite a bit of processed foods. What goes into animal feed is just a bit more "protein". I tend to by Kosher processed meats like hot dogs...

Dad worked in a Catchup factory for a while and you don't want to know what goes into catchup either. Or the government approved regulations for bug parts in a pound of chocolate. But I digress.

He worked in the tomato processing area where the tomatoes were prepped for cooking. Suffice it to say a few stems and less than perfect tomato's and the occasional crawling hitchhiker... The kind with a green body and a horn on one end. Yep there are government regulations for the quantity for those as well. Tomatoes are in the nightshade family and the stems are somewhat poisonous.

The really ripe tomatoes don't go to the stores they are too soft to ship.. They get canned in some fashion. The tomatoes that go to the store are usually shipped green or partially ripened so they can control the point where they are table ready. Gas ripening happens during cold storage.

I guess rendered worms and insects in ketchup bothers me less than the thought of what goes in to hot dogs and bologna. I always thought it was beaks, hooves and tails!

Huh. SOunds like the crap they make hamburger 'filler' from these days. So nasty they have to spray ammonia on it. Think about that next time you're in the drive through getting one of those $1 burgers...

Chickens do well with animal protein. I prefer ours to get it from worms, bugs, etc. I even give the young 'uns and the molters sardines in water. Quality does matter.

Hmm. Maybe shoot some of the squirrels that over-populate the neighborhood & give the henlys squirrel for dinner.... little velociraptors would love it.

Now after this whole conversation started I had to do some research. And I suffer from preconceived ideas and misinformation as well.

LOL.... they use meat mostly beef and pork fat spices and a binder like cornmeal or flour. The meat is just the stuff that is left over from meat processing. Stuff that is not package-able to put in those pretty packages we get in the store. By law they are not allowed to use mechanically separated meat, for beef and pork. And they are only allowed to use 15 percent of heart liver .... organ meats (meat byproducts). They don't even use animal casings they use cellulose casings. Suffice it to say most hotdogs aren't Kosher.

here is one website that has it succinctly
http://thestir.cafemom.com/food_party/105827/how_are_hot_dogs_made

Heck Tails make good Ox tail soup. Heads Head cheese. Bones are used to make Gelatin, Yep Jello. That's why many vegetarians wont eat jello products

With regard to Tankage and fish: In the case of fish it will be the whole fish or what ever is left over from Fileting. I think it is best to consider of it is a form of conservation.

Personally, I am glad that they use as much of the animal as possible and not just the "choice" parts. This animal gave its life for us to survive, the least we can do is not waste the animals life by just tossing it in the trash. This being said, I still don't want to know how the sausage is made..... Ignorance is bliss sometimes
